STOP ANTHROPOMORPHISING CHATGPT.

It cannot diagnose or detect. It can only predict a statistically likely "next thing to say".

It does not think. It does not even have an expert system behind it to guide the output.

IT IS AUTOCORRECT WITH A HUGE AND UGLY TRAINING SET.

ekis,
@ekis@mastodon.social avatar

@grrrr_shark Calling it "AI" is a very dangerous precedent to set. And really is just to inflate stock prices of tech companies that haven't produced any good tech. All of the core technology was developed open source, even stable difussion

ChatGPT is using what are called by scientists LLMs or Large Language Models, which is a type of NLP or Natural Language Processing. These are not even new algorithms

Its all hype; and the fact they are clearly creating private data sets bypassing captchas

ekis,
@ekis@mastodon.social avatar

@grrrr_shark One final point we need to be open and transparent for many reasons including the copyright theft which would shut 99% of these criminal companies down

But also b/c we can't peer review the datasets. And because of that:

"LLM models can reinforce a wide range of stereotypes, including those based on gender, ethnicity, age, nationality, religion, or occupation. This can lead to outputs that unfairly generalize or caricature groups of people, sometimes in harmful or derogatory ways"

LB: If Musk is claiming Signal has unpatched security vulns while he at the same time is pushing Telegram (which is not E2E encrypted by default and does not support encrypted group chats), I have a two word explanation of Elon and his claims for you:

Russian Asset.

That's really all there is to say. Witting or unwitting.

Universal staff shortages in almost every sector worldwide?

Geez, you'd almost think there'd been a deadly plague that had torn through the planet and killed, maimed, or incapacitated people, and caused serious emotional damage even to those who didn't get it.

@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@seachanger Yeah, exactly seethe

indigo8s,
@indigo8s@mastodon.social avatar

@grrrr_shark Here in Seattle, WA, US, we see fewer retail workers and bus schedules reduced due to staffing shortages per the companies or agency that runs them. AND we see this in grocery stores ("We're hiring!" signs), drug stores ("We're hiring!" signs), county transit system ("We're hiring!" signs), etc.

I am guessing not a single person at Burning Man will take home from this that their fantasy of self-sufficiency in the desert is in fact just a fantasy and is symptomatic of how some of the self-same people are causing the world itself to burn.

Quite ok. As we jump from discussion to discussion, the tonal whiplashes can be big, and cause problems.

Plus, you know, 2nd language, so not really capable of subtle tonal changes, and ofc cultural sensitivities throw of as well when addressing native speakers.

While I'm in my unmedicated-for-today ADHD rant space:

A word for privacy researchers who mock folks who use products by Megacorps whose product is the user:

This isn't my thought, this comes from lots of conversations with lots of the disabled community, but it's certainly my experience as a disabled person with a disabled child:

Assistants and home automation products that can control everything are optional privacy-stealing annoyances for your average person. (more)

grrrr_shark,

I mean, intellectually, in quiet moments, I still care. I absolutely know why this is Very Bad (tm).

But practically, I don't have the time, space, or money to give a shit.

So if you want to get mad about something, Peoples of The Infosec Sphere?

GET MAD ABOUT THAT.

Get mad about the fact that accessibility is SO bad that the only viable option is to sell your soul.

Do NOT get mad at/irritated by the people who need the service.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

Do NOT tell the users that all they need to do is become Linux experts and install Home Assistant (which is great, but it's work...) and alternative product X and they will be better human beings.

You want to help?

Build accessibility products. Support strong privacy laws WITH disabled people in mind, because when you support marginalised people, you support EVERYONE.

Including yourself.

Most people aren't "being mean" to bridger techbro.

They are angry at him for violating consent. His responses are in a lovely polite tone which ignores the actual argument and sounds like they are acknowledging the problem, but are actually dismissing it. Claims he is working on some nuanced solution that is "between opt-in and opt-out" are silly. It's like being "sort-of pregnant".

Folks are angry, and his condescension in the responses is making them angrier.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

And white techbros, MAYBE don't jump in with "you obviously don't understand, just hear him out", hmmm?

You're part of the problem. Plenty of us do understand.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

You can totally work on a passion project with good intentions and lofty aims and CAUSE HARM because your privilege got in the way of you asking the right people the right questions.

The right thing to do at that point is to take a REAL step back, not saying "I hear your concerns and am going to do it anyway, but I will opt you out, just ask, I am a nice guy"

Like...you being a nice guy literally doesn't matter in this.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions and unexamined privilege.

Banning puberty blockers is NOTHING but cruelty.

Puberty blockers are a BARE MINIMUM MEASURE for trans youth. If you care so damned much about these kids, you can at least allow them to put off permanent changes for some time

Granted, 2 years is about the reasonable max, but you can't tell me you accept trans adults and then force kids to undergo puberty for their assigned gender.

THOSE changes are largely irreversible. And many of those kids won't make it to a trans adulthood.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

So you are, in no uncertain terms, saying you'd rather lose those kids forever than to have them be happy being trans.

If you really think this is the way, you are horrible.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

And I am saying this as a mom who almost lost her kid. Puberty blockers fucking saved her.

I am going to be an asshole here, but honest to God, if putting on a mask to make others safe (or even to make them feel safe) for a fucking hacker conference is a step too far for your "anti-authoritarian" sensibilities, then you have absolutely demonstrated that the German hacker community is no community at all and have justified every reason I had to flee it.

YES, YOU ARE THE ASSHOLE.

Please, give me your hot argumentative takes so I can block your asses.

@lostgen @grrrr_shark @AhaAchja That’s the reason to put in a rule. People who aren’t wearing them because of peer pressure won’t need to feel like they’re compromising their cool — it’s the rule, so I have to wear it 🤷🏻 I swear if someone brought a booth with black disguised kn95s and called them anti face recognition masks most of the con would probably wear them. But not if it’s to help others.

So imagine my surprise when I saw on the back the procedure to rent it. 🤣

An extra special Happy to anyone, cis, trans, enby, genderfluid - who has ever had to fight to be seen as a woman (and wanted to be seen as one).

I'm a cis woman. My mom was a beauty queen, and my whole life, my mom treated me like I was never feminine enough (or at all). Sometimes she rejoiced in it - she hated that her own mom only ever saw her beauty, and liked to see me as only some sort of genderless intellectual Wunderkind - and, as I got older, she also disparaged me for it.

It left me as a woman never secure in the fact that I am one.

No one deserves to be treated as anyone other than who they are.

You own you. I believe and celebrate you.

Tattie,
@Tattie@eldritch.cafe avatar

@grrrr_shark my friend has a similar story. I once told her that she was more like a trans women than most cis women were, and she took it as the compliment it was intended as. 😊

Fighting for your identity and dignity as a woman is a powerful thing. I see you and celebrate you. Happy International Women's Day!

Hi all - @correctiv_org has translated their excellent reporting about the secret planning of far-right politicians and personalities to institute an actual "Master Plan" to (among other things) forceably deport millions people of foreign origin, including German citizens.

It is a story about how advanced and connected these people are. It is a story about how these are not just fringe groups.

This is in English, but there are also other languages available.

https://correctiv.org/en/top-stories/2024/01/15/secret-plan-against-germany/

Snowshadow,
@Snowshadow@mastodon.social avatar

@grrrr_shark @correctiv_org
This is like a plan in the US by far right wingers. I'm beginning to wonder if political groups in other countries are ,making the same plans and if so, where are they going to put the displaced? Bizzare

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@Snowshadow @correctiv_org it's nothing less than an attempt to reinstate the Third Reich, and the reason it's like groups in other countries is, unfortunately, because they are supported (and to some extent coordinated) by some of the same foreign actors.

There is a reason Putin funds far right groups in Europe and interferes with US elections. But he's just the guy who has figured out how to exploit these folks. The key personalities are home-grown.

Scary times.

Folks, please remember that COVID rapid tests aren't usually effective until several days after infection, and there is a significant false negative rate.

You aren't "safe" for other people because you're negative.

You're dangerous for other people if you are positive.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE

I find the admin-policing ridiculous.

If I, as a server admin, want to defederate or block ANYBODY, I will. I pay for this server by myself. I run a small instance for friends. I would of course give those friends notice if I were going to block on a larger scale, but I freely block Nazis all the time without asking for consent.

I do not need or want "open communication" with Nazis.

And as far as Meta goes? I'm more than skeptical. I'm tending towards preemptive blocking, but I need to think about it.

Me.

I need to think about it.

I don't need your fucking thoughts or judgments about me thinking about it.

My users (few though they are) have the choice to think about it too, and if they'd prefer to be somewhere that chooses differently, I will do everything I can to facilitate them.

But y'all can STFU with "admins who do X are not in the true spirit of the Fedi".

Admins - and users! - being ABLE to do X is the true spirit of the Fedi.

robryk,
@robryk@qoto.org avatar

@grrrr_shark

> if they'd prefer to be somewhere that chooses differently, I will do everything I can to facilitate them.

I don't think this is a universally held standard, esp. that Mastodon's block semantics make that very hard to do after the fact (because the blocked instances might not see the "user moved" message, so followers won't notice; also follows from blocked instances get dropped on the floor immediately last I've checked). I think at least some people would be way less prescriptive if that was commonly understood as a baseline standard.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@robryk Yeah, and I guess folks with big instances won't go to the trouble.

Maybe I should make some tools that go beyond what native Mastodon does. Just not super-motivated at this PRECISE moment.

But that's a good point.
