Gave up on social media completely for a long while… but this one’s pretty good! I contain multitudes- music, technology, film/TV, animals, philosophy (faithfully agnostic), podcasts, natural world and space, culture and criticism, politics and history. All sexualities and gender ideas welcome and supported- some variations here, too. But maybe most of all- I love human oddity. #HighRiskCOVID19 #COVIDIsNotOver

There is a new feature of Mastodon that I wanted to highlight for you all.

I had no use for the Lists feature before- but as of the recent 4.2 update, you can put some people you follow into a list- and then you can check a box in that list's details to NOT SHOW their posts in your main feed.

This could totally change Mastodon for me, in the best way.

I follow some newsy-political accounts, and often rush by them in the feed if I'm not in the mood to hear (more) bad news. Now I can put them in a list and not see them at all in and among the feed of real thoughts, pictures, artwork and jokes you amazing people share.

And when I actually feel like engaging with the news/politics of the world, I can pop over to that list and see only that stuff in there.

This way you can have customized feeds of different kinds of accounts, and just see your tried and true favorite people in the main feed.

It's a multi-Mastodon-feed experience, separated by mood and preference.
Which for me is brilliant!

So, we went to visit my husband's family that are Anti-Vax Horse Medicine people, because we felt bad for avoiding them for nearly 5 years, and guess what:

WE BOTH HAVE COVID!

TIL there’s a name for a weird feeling that I actually enjoy having:

kenopsia

n. the eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that’s usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet—a school hallway in the evening, an unlit office on a weekend, vacant fairgrounds—an emotional afterimage that makes it seem not just empty but hyper-empty, with a total population in the negative, who are so conspicuously absent they glow like neon signs.

UPDATE- I just now did more serious testing and I’m happy to say that it appears the Mastodon server software still strips private data out of the uploaded photos, REGARDLESS of the settings on the iPhone side.

Still good to check the settings (absolutely important to do so for any other social media!) but as far as I can tell- Mastodon has our BACK with privacy of uploaded images!! 🤩

Thanks, Mastodon developers!

I just found that in iOS 17, both the Mastodon app and Ivory were uploading photos with locations included.

Looks like there’s a new setting in Settings/Privacy and Security/Photos for each app (then ‘Options’) and the new default is to have location ON.

I choose to not share my location data in pics I upload to Mastodon. If you do the same and you use iOS 17, you should check that setting and turn locations off.

This is a strange little rock that I found in that looks like some weird altar or ancient tool.

It will definitely fit the label, as well as I think.

Maybe ? (Nah…)

This cloud appeared alone in the sky, kind of looked like a figure to me.

Some might see an angel, others a wraith…

Due to my childhood reading tendencies, I of course just see Mothman…

You see anything in it?

Hi- I’ve been using Mastodon for a year, as of today.

I didn’t come from that other site, or any other site… I came from the wilderness, where I’d abandoned all social media.

Thanks for being an awesome place to rediscover this kind of connection after many years without it.

I think you’re all pretty great!

This is a not-great picture of an amazing effect that happens on the in certain conditions, where the different directions (?) and/or speed of currents in the water creates two-toned colors with that sharp line dividing them.

Fascinating to me!
