Too many people I work with in policy describe the rise of misinformation as a dangerous new phenomenon.

Yes, social media has recently added countless new opportunities & dimensions, but circulating rumors & lies have been plaguing us for at least as long as we’ve been around to record them. Just look to the history of medicine or nutrition.

Humans believe & widely share all sorts of stories that aren’t true. It’s not new.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril Can we distinguish between "mis" and "dis" here? Misinformation has always been with us, so has disinformation, but the advent of mass media made "dis" more effective, and now pervasive media has made it toxic. Could you imagine Americans telling each other to flout pandemic control during the Spanish Flu at the prompting of the Axis powers?

For a sense of where Kartapolov's head is at, consider that he cites the "sins of the father" aphorism from Deuteronomy 24:16 but attributes it to Joseph Stalin, not the Bible.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@kevinrothrock We will see how this plays out, but I have seen an analysis of the mutiny as a sham meant to frighten anyone who has plans to eliminate Putin: "You think Putin is bad, look who is next in line." If Pregozhin is left in control of Wagner, that has high chances of being accurate.

Most fanciful ant adventure stories shrink the humans down to ant size. I prefer to scale the ants up to human size.

I think it presents fewer problems, and better explains the increased intelligence of the ants. Ants are among the most intelligent of insects even before you account for the complex decisions made on the colony-level. Nest site selection (when a mature colony moves) is very sophisticated.

I love the cover image on "Through the ant hill" --all summertime, and child-like wonder

A page from a different book about a person who is shrunk to ant size: White Patch by Angelo Patri. Copyright 1911. Black and white illustration of a ant teacher with glasses instructing three young ants on their history.

Don’t kid yourself. “Artificial intelligence“ is just Big Tech’s way of saying “hey, it’s not our fault. It’s the machine’s!“ In point of fact, every malign use of “AI“ is really just some human-composed algorithm doing something that maximizes profit or control at the expense of people. We must not let these companies off the hook. They’re in charge. Not the machine. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

  1. The US murder rate is down an 12% year-to-date, based on 90 cities that have released data.

If the trend holds it will be the single largest annual decline in the murder rate ever recorded.

And yet, you probably haven't heard anything about it.

If you are a white leftist and you talk “both parties are the same they are both capitalist” you will loose most of your black audience. I think it ought to be obvious that this isn’t because blackfolks love Democrats (in most cases, there is always someone being simple in any group) —no. it’s because the difference between the parties is material and obvious and these are unstable times.

When I hear such talk I wonder if the speaker is working on voter suppression.

In the past week, a lot of supporters for former President Trump have argued that the current administration has violated the norm against prosecuting former presidents.

The problem? That norm doesn't actually exist.

So I decided to dismantle it properly. Apart from anything else, criminal investigations of former presidents is probably a lot more common than you think:

Kids who are hungry aren’t going to be able to learn. There’s a reason many states are passing universal free meals programs.

A neighbor of mine manages food services for a big high school in my area. She’s told me these programs change kids’ lives.

Republicans are plainly against anything good, and especially, ironically, against kids.
