Of course democracy is disappointing. That's the design. Gently disappointing everyone trying chart a middle course. Leaving everyone not entirely satisfied, because resources are finite & everyone wants different things.

Good is mildly unsatisfying for everyone. That is the point. The least shitty system we aspire to

Throwing mildly disappointing democracy away, for not being perfect, is insanity.

Democratic void is terrible for nearly everyone, that's it's main feature.

jmaris,
@jmaris@eupolicy.social avatar

@ArtBear exactly ! In the European Parliament this is our mantra: never let perfect be the enemy of good.

@ArtBear You and me both... I was born and grew up in the UK and became so fond of the European Project that I made it my career. It tore me apart when we left.

And although the UK has been a pain in the past, and has never been the most favourable to integration, at times like these (invasion of Ukraine) they are sorely missed...

I'm all for criticising and , but this post is seriously misleading.

The data described in the privacy policy is what is necessary to federate comments. Whether this implies they can then use this data for other purposes is still up for debate.

Doing so would likely be illegal in the EU though.

This week, the Parliament signed off on the budget of the institutions, and it was a great week for : the sign-offs praise institutions for using Open Source software, encourage the adoption of , and push for the generalisation of the use of Open Source in EU institutions.

Dear European based LGBTIQ+ people.. (so basically everybody).

Today I attended an event in organized by @waag @DeGroene @gemeenteamsterdam and the Amsterdam public library called

Featured speaker this time was Euro Member of Parliament @kimvsparrentak who passionately spoke on the need for a more free Internet detached from and more focussed on and real interaction.

When confronted with her presence on X and Insta, and the lack of active presence here on the we promised to help her.

Please help us get a decent follower-base here and follow her account right now, before she even gets a chance to get more active. A follower base of more than a 1000 people will surely help her convince her party members to spend time and money on a real presence here.

I used a cut out of the image posted by @sicco in this post: https://todon.nl/@sicco/112372340250592627 thank you for that Sicco.

The #FOSDEM panels on the #CRA and #PLD underlined the divide between policy-makers and #OpenSource devs.

To bridge that divide, I think policy-makers have to work to make the #EU more accessible, which is why I decided to launch https://unfsckthe.eu/, a collaborative knowledge-base that will provide documentation for the EU, and help make it easier for the open source community to get their voices heard in #Brussels

Many of my compatriots have been bragging recently about how was right about

But as Russia pounds and Ukrainian soldiers face growing ammunition shortages, 🇫🇷 is blocking purchases of ammo for because it comes from outside the , again putting its defence industry before the Ukrainian soldiers' lives.

It's shameful: we pretend to want to lead EU defence, but only look after our own interests. CEE will never trust us.

The Trilemma: or why AI won't be as revolutionary as we expect.

We are in the midst of an AI revolution... or are we? As business leaders around the world scramble to integrate AI into their products and business practices, the cracks are beginning to emerge. We've seen GPT4 fail at basic reasoning, Google's AI search telling people to jump from a bridge, Microsoft's copilot inventing quotes from Vladimir Putin, and recidivism algorithms that continue to send the wrong people to prison.

jmaris,
@jmaris@eupolicy.social avatar

I might be completely wrong about this, but as it stands the data to build safe and reliable AI doesn't exist: scraping reddit to train an AI won't produce quality results, nore has scraping the wider internet. Building a bullshit generator whose usefulness diminishes by the day and marketing it as general purpose AI isn't a sign we're heading for a bright future: it's a sign we are in the midst of an AI bubble, and it's only a matter of time before it pops...

@abolitionniste @pmroman @elCelio @HistoPol @nooartur @Veza85UE honestly the issue with being concise in the EU is that involves leaving things out, the treaties are the best place to look.

What is not written: the European Council is also where important issues that could not be resolved in the Council of the European Union are resolved.

In fact, some (me) consider the EC to simply be a special configuration of the Council of the EU

The only way Europe survives the next 10 years is by dramatically ramping up its military-industrial production.

We are not ready for a Russian attack, and Trump's America won't help us. Europe needs to start producing everything it needs itself, and fast.
