3/27 How does it feel knowing that strangers will read your work?

It used to scare me. Then I realized that complete strangers are okay. I don't mind them.

My family reading my books is really, really scary. (At least my Dad is easy. The rest aren't really interested.)

Friends can also be difficult.

It's always, always, the fear of being judged.

And it's a huge relief when the feedback is positive.

Singer here. Still don't really do it in front of the family. Have stood in front of hundreds of strangers with no anxiety whatsoever. Strangers are low risk/high reward. :>

I have been saying to myself "I'm gonna start reading @pluralistic 's stuff" for an embarrassingly long time and that there Humblebundle left me no further excuses.

Decided to start with The Lost Cause for whatever reason and pretty engrossing so far.

It makes an interesting companion piece to Robert Evans' first dip into novel writing, After The Revolution: https://atrbook.com/

They are almost the same universe, but Evans is a bit more Mad Max about it, I guess.

Oh hey little tip

We've been having a lot of bad performance of the web interface lately, and I could not figure it out, I shut down everything else on the server that was running it but nothing seemed to work.

I had reached the point of flailing desperation this morning when I noticed there were about 15 devices in the Devices section of the thing, so I deleted them all, and how bout that, it really seems to have made it pretty snappy.

Note also you can name your machines in there.

Just had someone suggest that I start a company making my probes and "exit" by selling out to a scope vendor (who would almost certainly bury the project as active probes are way more profitable).

He even offered to put me in touch with VCs. What part of "this is not a capitalist enterprise" did you miss??

jpaskaruk,
@jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

@azonenberg I once did a, sometimes I go off on a rant in less than appropriate places. If I'm having a good day it comes off as biting wit but mostly I'm a human megaphone in your face.

So I did a big antifesto rant about crypto and then moved on and talked about my friend who is fundraising to open a new live venue right now and some dude who was right there suggested we do some sort of token offering or something.

I choose to say to myself that they do mean well.

    i need a new repair and restoration project like i need a third butthole.

    but i couldn’t say no to this poor old IBM Selectric rotting in a government surplus warehouse for $5. once the pride and joy of some government office, it is completely gummed with sawdust and old lubricant.

    besides, there’s something so wonderful about the premium burgundy/wine ones. i can’t wait to get the grime off and see the original colour. this will become a piece of functional artmaking equipment when it is done.

    https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/18/24104890/figma-ceo-dylan-field-cyberpunk-solarpunk-trends-sxsw-2024

    Don't lose your bearings, don't get distracted, don't fall for the trinkets. "Solarpunk capitalism" is still capitalism.

    Remember, it's more about the "punk" than the "Solar". Movement, not just aesthetic. Community as the protagonist.

    Media attention comes and goes, it's up to us what remains. And we're all in this together.

    #Cadquery

    Anyone here use it?

    It presents as #OpenSCAD which I love, only you write #Python instead of that C-ish stuff it uses, and if I read correctly it's got a better underlying render engine. Only heard about it because someone did a #Gridfinity reimplementation with it, and all things being equal I would definitely rather use that than devil-begotten, temple-beridden, snot-encrusted #Autodesk products.

    Like jeez man some of us don't run windoze.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @linux_mclinuxface

    I dunno, I read when I first got into that it uses a "C-like" structure, but I am only an Arduino-level C programmer; anyone treating my toots as anything but opinion, hearsay, lies or slander is being quite foolish.

    Main thing here was not to dissect syntactic details of the one I'm considering moving on from, moreso to get some real-world reports on the other one.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @linux_mclinuxface

    I had some rough patches at the start, but these days I can usually sort out whatever I need to do with this sheet:

    https://openscad.org/cheatsheet/

    I have a tendency to stay with a tool once I've learned it, so there's no guarantee that Python alone is gonna pull me out of there. I still reach for Bash when I'm scripting a system.

    But, I will say, OpenSCAD's render engine has failed me more than once when I was importing and modifying a complex STL. Had to use Blender sometimes.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @mcdanlj @linux_mclinuxface

    I will do exactly that, cheers! Like I said above, if I have an option to solve my one real problem (buggy renders sometimes) while remaining mostly mentally inert, I'll stick with what I know every time. :>

    edit: I always forget that with Free software there is usually a dev branch that's full of goodies, thanks again for the reminder.

    JFC, a Tiktok controlled by Steve Mnuchin and a cabal of right-wing extremist billionaire fuck sticks, or one owned by the Communist Party of China. We just can’t catch a break.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @shoq

    Is the company privately owned? Wall Street? VC?

    Google used to be so not evil, they made it their slogan.

    If it is owned by money that expects to profit at some point - and all money expects to profit - it is only a matter of time.

    If it's a scrappy thing that got going in the early days and never did an IPO, maybe you're right. But maybe next year is rough for whoever owns it, and private equity offers them a golden parachute to yachtlife.

    This is not a new story.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @shoq

    Also.. as it turns out, we only need a very small number of companies to be evil for the whole world to be fucked up.

    Maybe we should take away the choice to be evil. Maybe we should (stay with me here) punish evil companies in ways that make them smarten up.

    I don't even know what point you think you're making with "companies have to choose to be evil" as though choosing to be good was the default here.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @shoq

    particularly when I didn't even come here to bitch about evil companies. If you go back to the top, I came to praise evil companies, not bury them, because they are better than communists every damn time.

    jpaskaruk,
    @jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

    @shoq

    If we could accomplish that, we could handle a reasonable amount of capitalism. The current situation is untenable and we can't just keep handing our communications to the worst people in the goddam universe.
