I've been reading some history books about Europe in the middle ages. The matter of the education of kings is incredibly interesting. It seemed nearly universally recognized that an excellent education is essential to a family holding on to power. And even in the controversies of the day (such as religion) children of the ruling class were exposed to a surprisingly wide range of ideas. Including those treated as heresy for the general population.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@futurebird No absolute ruler wants to have people who can tell him that his plan is very bad.

It's received as trying to constrain his actions.

A true absolute ruler will want his mistakes to simply cost the livelihood, health and perhaps life of other people.

Nothing so horrible as him losing face or being forced to accept that his words aren't pure perfection.

Choosing to be 'neutral' - while active genocides are happening, in more than one area of the world - is choosing to be a coward.

Inaction, is in itself a conscious action.
Silence only helps oppressors & not the oppressed.

Grow some fu*king courage.
Start making some more noise, against multiple crimes against humanity!
Stand up, speak up for more than yourself & a paycheque. Many of us have already taken risks & we're marginalized folks. Don't tell me that you don't have any personal power!

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh You don't have to personally wage the hardest battles.

Small things like not buying things from genocidal countries, or avoiding events with people who support that evil.

Of course, if you're up to it, by all means do as much as you're able to. Just don't think it's that or nothing.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh I'm sure you know a lot more about these things than I do.

Unprecedented heatwave in Bangladesh

With temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, crucial crops have wilted and yields are expected to plummet.
The prolonged heatwave has scorched ripe chillies, pulses, sunflowers, almonds and paddy crops, among others.

@pvonhellermannn Terrifying, really.

It renders the availability of water irrelevant.

You basically can't do agriculture if it gets too hot for plants to survive.

And we're still on the way to worse.

Anyway, sometimes my brain creates really sad scenarios, and I play out my reactions to these scenarios, and it makes me really upset, but it's like I'm trying to prepare myself for every possibility even though it's both impossible and destructive.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I think it's good to let kids see how normal racism was.

How completely uncontroversial and just fine.

It's the most important part they need to know about racism.

Homo naledi is the most interesting new human like primate. They are from South Africa, little people. walked upright, but primates walking upright goes way back.

They had hands just like modern humans but longish arms and powerful shoulders ... so they could probably zip up a tree.

They have small brains half modern size. This has made people astonished that they may have had fire.

I'm glad I'll never meet one, a smart little firebug with powerful arms sounds terrifying. 1/

One of the many problems with instances not dealing with antisemitism among their users at all or making a moderation announcement that borders on excusing antisemitism is that all the users who’ve been widely blocked, limited, and suspended elsewhere for antisemitism will notice your instance doesn’t do much about antisemitism and just start moving there.

Then your instance is filled with a whole lot of antisemitism.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@TonyStark When deciding what to allow, always consider if it would be okay if 1000 people on your instance did exactly that same thing, every day.

It's never ever only just this once.

There's currently no dialysis for anyone living in .

Takes about 8 days for half of dialysis patients to die without it.

Maybe 40 days for all of them?

Note that some dialysis patients can't even manage 2 days without it.

It might not be getting shot, or bombed, but it still counts as murdering civilians.
