    @BradRubenstein @languagelovers @linguistics This is one of the things I still haven't fully figured out in Finnish. My ability to communicate has grown immensely and continues to grow, but I still sometimes find myself unable to grab the conversational turn without doing something rude.

    @kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

    @BradRubenstein @languagelovers @linguistics I'm not familiar with ASL norms at all, but I'm going to assume that that's a bit like slapping your hand over someone's mouth to get them to shut up.

    Thankfully for me, it's mostly just a matter of feeling like I'm interrupting. I can't say if I actually am, though (if I could I wouldn't have the problem, at least not as much).

    It's really interesting to me how these magic anti-radiation stickers, look a little like a wireless charging coil... And are even placed like one on a phone... using a real technology to add realism to the fake. They also look like the maze of the Minotaur. (I have a thing for things that blend old and new graphic forms like this... and I'm fascinated by scam products. )

    I guess the radiation gets lost in the maze.

    @kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

    @futurebird Now you know why so many people like the idea of running off into the woods. They can't manipulate you if they can't find you.

    (Of course, deliberately stoking those concerns is something a scammer might do, to get the people who might see through scams to remove themselves from greater society.)

    Morning.

    Here it is, several thousand years in the making: the protostellar jet HH212 as seen in the infrared by .

    We discovered this jet in 1993, glowing in the light of shocked molecular hydrogen at 2.12 microns, as gas emerges symmetrically at about 100 km/s from the two poles of a young protostar not far from the Horsehead Nebula in Orion.

    Our new JWST image spans six wavelengths & is ten times sharper than any previous infrared image.

    the hardest pill to swallow is that frontend is actually harder than backend

    kechpaja,
    @kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

    @nixCraft Frontend is harder than backend because, for some reason, we've decided to treat the browser as if it were an operating system. Not just a frontend, not a framework like Qt, and not even a window manager — no, those things you have to reimplement entirely from scratch. React and similar frameworks get you part of the way, true, but you still end up re-doing so many things that should be completely solved problems by now.

    Grr, rant over.

    There was (and possibly still is?) an orange juice shortage in Finland. Has there been an orange juice shortage anywhere else?

    I'm not sure I've seen any discussion of this in English.

    @kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

    @PTM Hmm, that makes sense given how global everything is (and it's not like we're growing oranges here).

    There were oranges (the whole fruit) in the store the last time I was there, but I didn't look for juice. I'll try and remember to check that shelf the next time I'm grocery shopping.

    I remember when I was a kid doing stage crew I spent an embarrassing amount of time thinking & planning what music I’d play when it was my big chance to select a song on the paint splattered shop tape player. I’d preplay the songs while jogging all week whittling it down to a short list which I’d carefully cue up the night before. (The shop master didn’t tolerate fast forwarding.) I’d always have a few options ready— in case someone wanted to hear another from the same composer. (they never did)

    @sjvn I've never actually seen these in the real world, but a coworker once mentioned having seen (or knowing about) a deck of "cost cards" that you could use at a meeting to estimate the cost (usually in days of developer time) of each new feature — to discourage bias, each employee would be asked to estimate the cost of the feature silently, and then everyone would put down the card with their guess (1 day, .5 days, 1.5 days, etc) at the same time. Apparently, these decks usually also included a "coffee card", and if everyone put that down at once, you were supposed to take a coffee break.

    Ants are the strange members of the hymenopterans. What defines a "bee" or a "wasp" ?

    Flying! Stinging! Ovipositing! Bright warning colors!

    Ants looked at the main advantages of being hymenopteran and said... nah. I guess stinging is OK... (Though most ants don't sting.) ... but most of this is nothing compared to going eusocial.

    Personally I think eusociality is such a huge advantage this makes sense.

    But then why aren't the bees who do both more successful? Are they too specialized?

    How did we overcome this defeatism in past crises? Did we, or were there just enough people willing to do something to ensure that something got done?
