Here and there, I get the sense that in mainstream culture it's normal for people to be either sloppy about the security of their personal computing devices, or to give access to people who don't respect their boundaries.

I read a story where one of the characters was like this, and it was very unnerving to me.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@recursive I remember meeting someone in college who didn't want to install certain apps/go to certain sites on their phone, because to them it was normal for "friends" to just come up and grab their phone and look at it. And in many aspects of mainstream culture, it does seem like simply wanting privacy is treated as inherently suspicious.

I have been spending the past month working (a lot) to relaunch my daily story recs as a newsletter with the demise of Twitter. Built up well over a month of recs to post.

But IDK which service to use. Obvs not Substack. 5x/week emails need to be affordable. Is this a thing? Any comments welcome

So with Substack no longer an option - anyone know of a good platform for releasing regular (weekly or fortnightly) flash fiction, articles, essays and art? Is there anything else out there (other than Patreon)?

The Fediverse increasingly has worse disinformation than other spaces. The problem is, the users don't read the news very much, and many have a culture that rejects reading and discussing news. So the pool of people who talk about the news is too small for fact checks. Media literacy here is so low that people go viral with massacre denialism because they read something in Middle East Eye and don't know it's Qatar's Global Times, a propaganda outfit used for things Al-Jazeera won't touch.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@Alon Have you ever thought about putting together a list of biased sources like that that people tend not to realize are biased? Obviously a comprehensive list might be impractical, but a dozen or so of the most common culprits would make a good blog post.

Watched a video of Gigantiops destructor (the ant with the best eyesight of ants) A lone ant hunting makes a point of sneaking up on the prey from behind, circling them to stay clear of their antennae and out of range of their eyes.

Can that be done without a "theory of the mind of the other" ?

"It can see me here, it can't see me there?"

Were this a mammal I bet people would call this evidence sufficient. Since ants are so tiny, & have such tiny brains we look for other explanations.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@futurebird Why does that require theory of mind, though? "It will only react if it sees me, and it will only see me if I'm in this particular area" isn't all that complex of an idea. You don't have to fully understand the idea of another being having a perspective of its own, you just have to understand causality.

FWIW, I doubt most humans actually grasp the idea that other people have perspectives, at least not to its fullest extent.

The crucial quote, which made the headline in the Finnish version but not the English: "We have agreed not to politicise this war thing in any way."

Now this is actually interesting: an European citizenship, with all the rights that entails, not tied to the person's state of origin.

I just thought that nation states are at the root of so many problems today. This could be an idea worth exploring, possibly charting a way out from that particular harmful fiction.

Technology is always a reflection of the society that invents or produces it.

For example, when my mother was trying to buy a dishwasher in Manila back in 2016, she walked around every major electronics store with no luck.

Why? Because in the Philippines, if you could afford to buy a dishwasher, you were rich enough to hire household help.

And with so many poor people who need those types of jobs, if you could afford a maid and didn’t hire one - you were viewed as a greedy, selfish jerk.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@mariyadelano

> if you could afford a maid and didn’t hire one - you were viewed as a greedy, selfish jerk.

For me, this is the biggest cultural shock here — that hiring a maid might be viewed as an obligation, as opposed to flaunting your wealth and rubbing it in everyone's faces.

The wall is breaking: Yoav Ben-Tzur, Minister in the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, and Social Services (Shas; this is distinct from the Minister of same, who is also from Shas), is the first minister to say that the government will need to go to new elections within 90 days of the end of the war. He quickly walked back his remarks ("I didn't mean it this way, and also I didn't speak for Shas"), but it's the first time a minister acknowledges the government has lost the public's confidence.

Ah yes, we had one of those in Finland a couple of decades ago, in the Ministry of Finance. Sauli Niinistö was Minister of Finance, with Suvi-Anne Siimes (Vas.) as "minister in the Ministry of Finance".

LIFE HACK

How I use ChatGPT to write stuff:

  1. Write out a prompt to generate the text I want
  2. Read the response
  3. Go "this is fucking garbage, what the fuck, you call that writing?"
  4. Get pissed off and write the thing correctly

(This is what I call https://xkcd.com/386/ as a service)

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@hazelweakly Or if you're writing a message to a person: slowly develop a prompt that produces the message you would like to send, then take the prompt, edit it into something that doesn't sound like a prompt, and send that instead.

    kechpaja,
    @kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

    @futurebird It's moot. The important question is whether they're paying their taxes, and whether the second derivitive of the tax rate is fair.

    Even more generally speaking, the problem is that some people are too poor, not that some people are too rich. We need to solve poverty, and the rich should be required to make a proportionate contribution to solving poverty, but nobody would be helped if they simply stopped being rich without that money going somewhere useful.
