@seachanger Ooooh! This is so very tempting.

Would you mind describing the texture of the smoked fish?

I don’t understand the gnashing of teeth about / joining the Fediverse. To me, more federation is better than less, even if that federation potentially brings in more spam and garbage that we have to manage, because allowing humans to communicate on the Fediverse strengthens the Fediverse, and I like the Fediverse better than corporate control.

Letting Meta join the Fediverse does not cede control of the Fediverse to Meta. The same rules of the Fediverse still apply. If Meta doesn’t do its job in moderating their instance, existing countermeasures used against any other poorly-managed instances can be deployed. Meta is, in fact, forced to cede some control to the Fediverse.

I continue to believe that blocking is not an effective way to manage federation, and so it follows that I believe preemptive blocking is a bad idea.

Let them come. It’s nice here. Maybe some will decide to move to a Fedi instance instead, and it will be easier because they won’t lose touch with their friends.

@scott @drahardja We already limit dot social for at least a day or two when we get hit with spam/abuse waves from accounts there.

When things settle down, we lift the limit.

I'm not convinced this would work with threads.

Day 19 of

Another early piece, this one from my Generative Flowers series. This series was also one of the first to be shown and sold in a gallery, which felt great!

Day 18 of

Today, I'm sharing a piece from my early experiments with creating art inspired by chemistry. The code was written in AS3, and I rendered it to video so it's still easily playable.

Day 14

I'm sharing an art-game I created early days of Covid: Smash-A-Rona!

It's best on mobile. To play, you 'smash' the virus particles with 'medicine' before they reproduce out of control.

It's free! So click on the 'No thanks, just take me to the downloads' link when the pay screen comes up.

I hope you have fun with it. Building it helped me deal with the extra anxieties of that time.

Since the Genuary 'prompt list' is so disappointing, I'm going to use my SciArt Prompt Generator for my creative coding inspiration.

I think I'll use it to randomly pick a prompt for each time I want a challenge.

Would you like to join me? Or just suggest prompts to add? Or both?

Let's crowdsource this.

Reply with your prompt idea, and if you'd like to be credited for it on the project page: https://artatomic.itch.io/prompts

Day 21 of

Today I'm sharing a piece that started with another Genuary prompt: "Negative Space". With my code, I drew a nebulous looking background and then a tree structure in the foreground.

Day 7 of

Today, I'm sharing a piece I created as part of a Creative Coding challenge.

With code, I divide the boxes semi-randomly, then I 'draw' a segment of one of my hand drawn pieces into the boxes. The result is both geometric and organic.

I love how it looks like it could be a quilt pattern.

Generative art created with code and hand drawings. The pattern looks a bit like an unconventional quilt with boxes dividing into smaller boxes. Segments of one of my hand drawn floral pieces are drawn into the squares.

Just picked up some new test prints, and I'm happy with how they turned out. The fine art paper really makes a difference. If I get these in mat board tonight, I'll be bringing some to the Maker Faire tomorrow.

"It’s such a tiny, simple, thing and it makes a huge difference for me. It reduces my anxiety, and it just makes my quality of life better. And that shouldn’t matter, but getting all worked up about it is like getting all worked up about my glasses, which I wear so I can see clearly and enjoy my life. It really shouldn’t be any different."

I hadn't even thought about it this way, but I agree completely.

Hey vis.social folks!

Our database will be migrated to a new server this Saturday at 9:30am UTC.

This will cause a down-time on vis.social for about 2 hours.

The upside is that this migration should improve our database performance.

Thank you for your patience.

Hey vis.social folks!

Did you know that you can make your posts so that they only are shown to your followers, but are not private?

By setting your posts as 'unlisted', they won't flood our Local Timeline.

This is especially recommended if you're posting completely off-topic, since we are a topic-based community instance.

How to set a post to 'unlisted'? This might help: https://github.com/KristinHenry/vis.social#set-the-privacy-level-of-your-post

You can also set all of your posts as 'unlisted' by default, in your settings.

Hey vis.social folks!

This is NOT twitter. Please don't treat our Local Timeline like it is.

Use CWs generously, with a sense of overabundance of thoughtfulness about triggering others.

If there food or alcohol? Use a CW

Is the topic very upsetting to most people? Use a CW!!!!

Alternatively, make your posts Unlisted.

Day 4 of

Today, I'm sharing some 'sketches' from a series I call "Becoming a Dangerous Artist". I started it a few years ago, and it's due for an update...so this is kinda a 'to-do list' for me :)

I wrote a bit about my thinking: https://kristinhenry.medium.com/on-becoming-a-dangerous-artist-6a22e5b1dfd4

I wrote this back in 2017, and yet it still sits at the back of my brain. Sometimes, it even takes over: "To be dangerous to fascism, one must simply be an artist. And so, all art is “protest art”."

Hey vis.social folks!

Please feel free to post as much as you are inspired to during IEEE VIS!

No need for CW's unless you find them helpful to organize/subject your posts. The exception being about AI topics.

Please continue to follow vis.social rules and add CWs to any AI topics. The more descriptive your CWs are, the more helpful your posts will be. Remember that this helps folks sift through the ubiquitous hype and find your work.

Hey vis.social folks!

Mastodon is a bit different than most social platforms, and it can be quirky and confusing at times. But once you get used to it, you may appreciate it even more.

We've been working on some helpful documentation for you. It's an ongoing-work-in-progress, but there are already helpful bits in there.

CWs can be confusing. How do you even add them?

Hey vis.social folks!

Please remember to add CWs for off-topic posts like "US Politics" and more.

Yes, even for exciting news.

We're an international community as well as being topic-based.

We recommend that you post off-topic subject as 'unlisted' and/or with a CW/Subject.

Genuary 2024 Day 2: "No palettes. Generative colors, procedural colors, emergent colors."

I had fun with this one! Once I got it working well, I just kept creating new pieces with it.

I expect folks to not like this one, because folks usually like the pieces I'm not in love with. And I'm in love with this one, for some reason. Ha!

I'm planning to add more to these posts:
