This is my thing: Reading trial transcripts. My job was reading trial transcripts looking for appealable errors.

The defendant (yes, my client) walked in to court with baggy pants. The judge (a woman) was offended and angry. She thought the defendant was disrespecting her.

Biology faculty at UT are meeting today to talk about a hiring plan. I really don't envy their job of trying to make a department located in Texas attractive.

We're in the middle of an ongoing purge of black staff, the adminstration just called in the state police to beat and jail students, and no one in their right mind would want to risk pregnancy to have a family here. It's bleak.

15 years ago, I did marketing for a big social media software company. I thought this made me equipped to do community work here on the Fediverse. But when I volunteered on a Fediverse project, I learned lots of lessons.

Namely, people are even more unforgiving if it’s free compared to if it’s paid. If people are willing to pay, they’re far more likely to be grateful for the work put in. Sad but true.

Despite some negative experiences, I still volunteer my time because it’s important to decrease the barrier to entry for the Fediverse. However, I’m now very cautious and am taking measures to preserve my sanity as well as those who use my services in good faith.

Every single time I see someone dogpile on a Fediverse developer or admin, though, it sure makes my blood boil regarding how much others devalue peoples’ work. Again, work which is being provided for free.

Musk you caused another scandal on Twitter by posting a picture of Stalin.

Result? Thousands of angry shares calling him an “idiot”.

But Musk is just using the same media tactics as Trump:

• making an incendiary or incredibly stupid statement
• which are then shared by 1000 of supporters
• but also shared by, most importantly, 10’000 of his opponents

In the times when media is all about “clicks”, “enagements”, “shares”, “brand recognition”, it’s not Musk who is an idiot here.

We somehow forgot about the most efficient social protest strategy - ostracism. Just block toxic people and never see them again.

The electricity and water use required by data centres is becoming cause for concern. Iowa and Ireland are calling for moratoriums on new development projects. Microsoft’s global water consumption grew 34% from 2021 to 2022. And estimates say that around 80% of content in data centres could be stuff we never use again, stored by default to consume energy in perpetuity for no purpose at all.

I was watching the 30th anniversary chat between John Romero and John Carmack, and the moderator asked what they thought of being compared to Lennon and McCartney. Carmack's answer pointed out that the Beatles were an "overnight success" only after years of constantly composing and playing live. Similarly, Doom was an "overnight success" only after id Games had made 30 prior games - and like the Beatles, learned how to do it right.
