JJ was moping around with his tail between his legs yesterday. We didn't know what was wrong.

Then we found the torn up and eaten box of cookies in my college-age son's bedroom.

Was the sad look guilt or a stomach ache?

(This dog cannot be trained not to eat cookies, but the college age boy should be trainable.)

Soon some of our instance domains need to be renewed for another period

To pay for this and current months server expenses I was thinking, maybe I could "trade" some domains I own and don't use for a donation to our services ❤️

That way the domain gets used for something (maybe) and we can pay our renewals with domains :blobcatgiggle:

I have the following:

  • root.st
  • re-post.net
  • jsx.me
  • codedb.net
  • ools.net

Let me know in a DM :cat_hug_triangle:

I wonder what average lifetime of a Fediverse handle is. Compared to an e-mail address, and handles on other social media systems.

I suspect it is much shorter. How much of this might be intentional vs inadvertent?

Examples: firefish.social disappearing. Moderation policies on a server changing. People trying out the Fediverse and only settling on a place after some trial and error.

What can we do to make this process as smooth as possible?

Seeing people say the legislation will be the most recent reelection killer. Just not buying it. Assuming it gets through the Senate with similar margins (yes, there’s a question about whether the Senate should hold hearings), that’s just silly.

  1. The legislation to force ByteDance to sell its interests is strongly bipartisan.
  2. Trump, despite that it’s a bunch of crap, is already and has been saying how tough he is on China for years. So tough on China is a campaign issue for him.
  3. if it were a problem (which I don’t think it is) for Biden, he could always let it pass without signature (although I still think signing it is a net positive politically among likely voters)
  4. If Biden were to veto it, if the Senate vote looks anything close to the House, he could be facing an override and, if you want to make a President look weak on a national security issue in an election year, overriding his veto is one hell of a way to do that & would lead to him looking weak on nat security.

So no.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Seems the ink is not completely dry on the rapist's $90M plus bond.

Judge Kaplan is giving E. Jean Carroll until Monday 3/11 to object to the "surety" of the bond.

A bond is a loan. It needs to be backed up by sufficient funds. If not, there is a risk of default, like any other bond. It will be interesting to see if Ms. Carroll is satisfied with the surety of her rapist's bond.

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@tofugolem @JamesBazan Peeling off one more layer of the onion — they don’t necessarily want women dead as a primary objective — at least not the White women, anyway. What they want is their subservience — keeping them pregnant and barely scraping by impedes women from supporting themselves financially. That makes them dependent on men for the basics of living again, and so prevents them from challenging the White Christian Man’s socioeconomic dominance.

Teri_Kanefield, (edited ) to random
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

I'll put this response here for everyone:

The Court made a decision. All we can do is speculate about why. Eventually we may know why they elected to proceed in this manner.

Like everyone else, I can speculate on why they proceeded this way, but I refuse.

I predict they'll nix the idea of immunity.

That's different from speculating on what happened in a closed meeting.

(Maybe, as a defense lawyer, I am accustomed to courts not doing what I want them to do or think they should do.)

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@Teri_Kanefield It’s Brookings (caveat!), but I found this law prof’s commentary to be illuminating. Reasonable minds can and will differ, I suppose, but even the 3 SCOTUS liberals certainly could look at the DC Circut’s holding and think along with their colleagues “yes, that’s the right outcome, but the reasoning behind it is flawed and we can’t solve one problem by creating a dozen more down the road.”

…so with that, now we just wait and watch. 🍿

https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/why-the-supreme-court-should-grant-certiorari-in-united-states-v.-trump

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@cdlhamma @Teri_Kanefield I still think it was brilliant for Smith to have forced the immunity issue out now. If he’d let that sit til days before Trump’s trial began and Trump’s defense asserted it then, <insert record-scratch grinding-halt here> and yeah THEN we’d be seeing delays til well after the election. With a disposition of this in June, the timeline for a late-summer or early fall trial is still viable.

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@Teri_Kanefield It certainly got me thinking yesterday in ways I hadn’t yet. Nonlawyers will leap right to the holding without taking a moment to consider the reasoning behind it…and the reasoning is where the dragons be even when the holding itself feels correct.

SparkleTea, to random
@SparkleTea@toad.social avatar

Truthfully, even a trial to conviction on any federal case would be subject to challenge through and past January 2025. In other words, it wouldn't be final. In that context this bulshit SCOTUS move is slightly more tolerable.

I like the state court cases. Mostly because those are pardon-proof.

But I'd much rather we throw these bastards out by voting.

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@SparkleTea If the Court wanted to stall this indefinitely they’d have called for briefs and argument in their next term (the one that begins in October 2024) — that’s what they’ll calendar for most cert petitions that they grant during the course of a given term. THAT is how one punts a scorching hot potato while camouflaging it as routine, ordinary “that’s what we do with all of our cases” procedure.

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimcarroll 80 million Americans — including so-called pastors and so many of our major media outlets — know exactly what Trump is…and aren’t absolutely repelled by it. On that metric, our democracy got mauled in 2015 when he declared candidacy for his first term.

No trial, no matter when it’s held, will change those minds; holding out hope that it might when so many of public information channels are flooded with poison today is, I fear, misplaced.

mjf_pro,
@mjf_pro@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimcarroll You get 10M of those 80M — 1/8 of them — to acknowledge that treating each other like 🫏 🕳️ s is unacceptable in society, least of all from its leaders, and we have a different narrative. Now I’m watching Shortcut to Happiness (2007) starring Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

This is a stellar cast. It should be good.

Unfortunately, it was a giant box office bomb. It had a $30 million dollar budget, yet only earned $686,846. A number isn’t missing there, it did that poorly.

I suspect marketing had something to do with this disaster. The poster indicates that this is a rom-com, but it’s more like a fantasy comedy.

Here’s the description:

A down-and-out writer sells his soul to the devil in exchange for fame and fortune.

Apparently, this is based on the “The Devil and Daniel Webster” written by Stephen Vincent Benét back in 1936.

iMDB scores this a 5.4, which indicates a perfectly mediocre move. But we’ll see.
