I haven't tied flies in hand for a couple of months. I caught a juvenile spotted bass with one of these on the Ocmulgee River yesterday. It was the only fish that I caught, and I caught it before my first cast! The fly was drifting in the water while I was peeling line off of the reel.

The silk thread came from a lot of vintage silk on eBay.

Did you know that the first man-made dye was meant to cure #malaria?

William Perkin's teacher theorised that quinine, a treatment for malaria, could be synthesized.

Inspire, the 15-year-old set out to do so. His home #experiment produced an odd #purple sludge.

He tried to dye some #silk with it & found it beautiful & lasting!

He got a #patent, raised capital & soon, #Queen #Victoria was wearing his invention. He got #rich with #cheap mauve.

BONUS MYSTERY! https://researchoutreach.org/articles/mystery-victorian-purple-dye/

#history

This is a photo of a small piece of silk fabric dyed with mauveine supplied to Queen Victoria for a dress about 1860. It shows a wooden mid-brown frame which holds a coarse homespun fabric, on which a square piece of bright mauve silk is secured. Underneath the square swatch is a coiled silk rope, also in a vivid mauve colour.

🧵 1/ My new project: This linen-yarn T-shirt is a memento of my dog, who once got stuck at the bottom with his claw and tore a hole. It's darned in the shape of a yellow beetle. To make the whole thing more harmonious, I'm going to do a few small appliqués elsewhere today. @visiblemending

While I was spinning and plying I was convinced this would turn out fantastically ugly, but on the skeinwinder it doesn't look so bad. Maybe it's the lighting.

I have had a lot of struggle here for 2 days 😤 😢. Time to cut and use the other end, from outside! Does somebody have the same experience with silk threads?

[Analysis] Workers Are About To Get Way More Power. Here's How. (www.youtube.com)

The National Labor Relations Board could soon make it much easier for workers to unionize. The board plans to re-establish the Joy Silk Doctrine, which would force employers to recognize and bargain with their employees' union if a majority of workers sign authorization cards....

behind a couple when they got married.
The bride wanted irises, lilacs, birds, a vine and rainbow colours.
This now hangs in their home 💜

Yesterday I made some more web-fine experiments with raw silk fibres and . I use cocoon strippings from pure mulberry silk which still contain a lot of : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sericin It's one of the proteins the silkworms use to "glue" their cocoons. You can imitate the process of connecting the fibres with heat. @fibrearts

Fly fact of the day: Some adult flies produce silk.
Silk is a very common protein fiber to produce, shared by a lot of arthropods, so I'm not so surprised when I learn of another insect that can produce it.
    But still, it's pretty cool.
Some male flies in family Empidae wrap gifts for females in silk produced in their legs.
    The more you know!

Interesting video about some of the most expensive textiles from around the world.

The skill and patience of the people working on those fabrics is astonishing.

Most of them are too far away for me, but maybe, one day, I can visit those weavers lace looms in France.
