I was looking something up in my 2023 spreadsheet and thought I'd share some interesting bits; the average temperature of my runs last year was 3°C, and wore pants 51 days of the year (for running). Did I mention I'm a giant nerd that tracks everything? 🤣

At work, we had a designated quiet space. Today I learned they reverted it back to a conference room though we have many, mostly unused. It was an emergency decompression space. When I spoke up about this loss, I was told, “If someone has a problem with bells & whistles they probably don’t belong in a hospital.” They didn’t realize it was me. “Of course you belong here—you’ve been here forever—we all have to suck it up. We’re all burned out.”

A question that's been plaguing me for years. Usable old clothing I donate to thrift shops, but holey, worn-out things seem to have no recycling path we can access, at least in my city.

I know rag & fibre is used in many places, like paper-making, utility/shipping blankets, chemical absorption, upholstery, etc.

How does one get stuff into such streams? Any insights?

@ottaross can't offer much more than a google search, but "textile recycling near me" provides a few hits, although it looks more on the commercial-scale side of things. Would love to hear if they accept smaller batches.

A update from me. Since setting it up and configuring the RPi + SSD and a couple of existing Reolink cams I'm on to integrating some of my custom hardware. Mostly and based.

I also found a Sony centre-channel bar speaker for $5 at a thrift shop and hacked it to add a power jack, amplifier board, and hardwired cable (plus a salvaged laptop speaker for 2nd channel) and mounted it unobtrusively in a stairwell.

I find the audio description funny and/or intriguing ("Sound played in Montreal Metro stations before a train leaves.") : are they now synthesizing the sound, playing it as audio instead? It used to be a "feature" of the motor coil startup, some discussions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/montreal/comments/5a6azm/the_stm_dou_dou_dou_sound/ .
I miss the smell of peanut oil cooking the wooden brakes.

I wonder if Enviro Canada has recently taken humans out of the forecast pipeline, as the forecasts seem to be so volatile lately. They swing all over the place as if they're just dumping raw model output directly to their website.

@jetsandrain @actuallyautistic Going with the NT assumption that your boss genuinely thinks you're the best person to address the conflict, maybe he sees in you something that can serve the purpose. You might want to confirm this/make that explicit.
If that's the case, then just be yourself. Don't try to become someone else, put as many barriers as you need to remain true, and ask of your team members they do their job. My only "technical" advice, don't try to force ppl to get along.

@yourautisticlife @actuallyautistic Found solace in the avionics domain, safety-of-life/safety-critical software, with my gateway drug being software QA. There are still tech bros and cowboys in those industries, but I find my voice is more respected there. And if not, I can say "remember that day when 300 customers died? Do you want that again?"
