At #37c3 they have IRC, and Matrix for text and for voice they setup their own LTE/2G/3G/SIP/DECT network where you bring whatever phone-like device and pick a 4 digit phone number.

Meanwhile in the USA for #defcon they just paid Discord money and told everyone to accept their privacy policy, and even the DC Privacy Village asks people to sign up for Slack and Google.

People ask why I fly to CCC from the USA. It is because that is the closest place to find a thriving hacker culture.

@lrvick Our events sure try to be a little tech-utopia - and we do try to run it with a mix of idealist professionalism and DIY. It's an important part of this idea that we let "guests" become "participants" who can run their own team if they like. It can be a challenge to run, but definitely worth it more often than not.

I often brag on tumblr about how "on the fediverse I never have to ask people for image descriptions, why is tumblr so terrible at this?" etc.

But, I've made the mistake of re-sharing a few images without descriptions recently! I was lulled into thinking it was not a problem.

Just FYI I'm going to get strict again about not re-sharing undescribed images. (You should too, it keeps the feed readable.)

If you forget? If this is new? Don't feel bad, just stop doing that.

@futurebird better drafting features might help? I try to nearly always write/boost with alt text. on other accounts I’m less strict, because I don’t want to force everyone.

SD cards are the literal worst.

they've expanded to be the size of small hard drives, and devices like the rpi keep using them as boot media, but they:

  • use garbage tier low endurance flash cells internally
  • have little to no overprovisioning for wear
  • perform only the most basic wear levelling
  • have no protocol level integrity checking
  • have few internal error correction features, if any
  • decay comparatively quickly without patrol scrubs
  • do not perform patrol scrubs
  • cannot do PLP
promovicz,

@gsuberland most embedded software, in comparison, will be like „YOLO“ - it doesn’t even check itself. so we did lots of custom things in PLCs…

Voting is just one thing you can do to shape your society and community. It gets a lot of attention because powerful people really do seem to let a surprising number of us have a tiny little mote of influence. The powerful talk about voting ceaselessly, because "the people" having power, however constrained gives them endless anxiety. Don't fall into the trap of thinking it is your only power.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking, because it's only a little power, isn't important either.

promovicz, (edited )
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@futurebird Non-partisan tactical voters are a little more powerful. But what people should really do is to talk to politicians, or influence them in other ways. That's real politics, and it actually works sometimes IMO.

The Congress talk I would like to see is not about tech at all, but about social organization in an age of global crisis. How do we hackers and hacktivists access political power if politics won't talk to us? How do we keep our groups together under pressure? How do we maintain solidarity? How can we overcome new social barriers in the scene and beyond?

Some 'science' photo libraries are...questionable.

This photo claims to be "Ant carrying aphid egg, SEM" colorized to highlight the "egg" but look closely! (https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/370844/view/ant-carrying-aphid-egg-sem)

It's NOT an egg. That's just part of the ant's mouth! Take a look at the second set of photos by Hugo Darras. ( https://flickr.com/photos/fourmis/5004761756 ) you can see this is part of her maxillae, the part she uses to collect liquid.

How did they decide it was an aphid egg? Most aphids don't even lay eggs they give live birth!

Three photos of an ant's head as seen from below. The photos show how the maxillae can extend, it also shows that the "egg" in the other photo was just part of the ant's mouth.

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@futurebird Good catch! But I suppose that someone must always browse and check those collections. I've seen a lot of wrong facts in computing museums, but then you have to get into the weeds to correct things. I did sometimes. 😅

nerditry:
I make mostly (but not exclusively) B&W images (at least for my fine art work). Is it worth using a dedicated monochrome sensor?

Most digital cameras are designed to record color, using a special mask in front of the sensor called a "Bayer filter". This allows color information to be derived from the raw sensor output, which otherwise would just record brightness. But the Bayer filter can also reduce effective resolution of the image a bit.

So what's the tradeoff?

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@mattblaze @reinoudk Yes... that's where I'm aiming at. My family has a cinema background, that's why I'm into those things... 😅

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@dan131riley @mattblaze @reinoudk yes - my old little Canon 1000D could do it on Linux, but model support can be an issue with the required tools. i used that setup for macro, and it‘s also very cheap. 😁

Okay, , ich brauch mal nen Labeldrucker.

Anforderungen:

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@anathem Uff. Da scheint sich was verändert zu haben. Es gab da mal nur eine. Müsste ich auch erstmal wieder durchprobieren. Sowas endet leider oft in custom… aber sonst bin ich mit dem Device ganz happy.

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

If people had less access to high voltage electricity, but many sources for low voltage DC (24V and under)

Would it still be possible to manufacture silicon conductors using more people and different machines?

Basically, could you do it with machines powered by small batteries?

eg. off the grid.

promovicz,
@promovicz@chaos.social avatar

@futurebird I think that's impossible with current technology - because of climate control and water treatment. I'm not sure which of the tools use the most power - but some also use quite a bit.

Voltage is not a problem in itself since we have reasonably good conversion technologies for constant conditions (~98% efficiency is doable). Data center backup power has battery rails at the usual 24V or 48V, and semi fabs use much the same for backup.
