There's this "Threatened" (as in, Endangered species), rare stork I've been starting to see in the local park here (Raintree Walk in Taiping, ): a "Milky Stork":

It's tall! Beak is menacing, looks like it could snip off an arm or something

It strikes me as ironic that everyone flocking to Social Media by-and-large sought to gain influence, but as they de-facto gave away their Copyright ownership of everything they posted - guess what - that influence will be absconded with by the AI that came along afterwards, using their posts for training, with no fair attribution to speak of.

One of the best-loved vehicles on the road here in seems to be the Toyota "Lite Ace GXL" minivan (which apparently can be fixed up forever, and pretty much never dies). They often have stylized 90's decalling on the side saying "Vanette".

It sort of makes my day when I see one.

A nice example of "Re-use" in "Reduce, re-use, recycle".

He additionally had to have his appendix out, and had to have all his toenails pulled out (among other difficulties).

I've been using a "static content generator" self-publishing web platform for over 5 years now, called "Jekyll". It's still holding up well to posting my video Talks (as well as photos, and the occasional longer-format essay), and I can host it inexpensively on a $5US/month VPS hosting plan.

is quite no-frills (still no dark mode in its default theme, called "Minima"):

https://github.com/jekyll/minima

...but on a day like today - where there is a lot of unrest and commotion around abandoning Substack - I'm glad to just let my content just sit mellow in one place.

shines as having been worth it, when time and time again, some "too-good-to-be-true" platform doesn't remain a good option.

There's a parable (one of Aesop's fables) sometimes told in monasteries, relevant to the debate of federating with :

"The story concerns a farmer who finds a viper freezing in the snow. Taking pity on it, he picks it up and places it within his coat. The viper, revived by the warmth, bites his rescuer, who dies realizing that it is his own fault."

My wife is looking forward to deleting her Instagram account once she can connect with the same folks from her Mastodon account. Being able to remain in touch with over 100M people who still use Meta products out of the comfort of an ad-free, privacy-friendly platform like Mastodon is a game changer.

sbb,

@andynoelker @gersande @Gargron Here's the worst case scenario I foresee: the existing Mastodon instance admins burn out and quit - badly damaging the Federation - because it's just too hard to maintain the smooth federating, on top of all the other duties of runing an instance.

There's no magic forcefield that ensures a smooth course for the instance admins, should Meta introduce stress on the instance admins - intentionally or unintentionally caused on Meta's side.

It's foolhardy to take the instance admins' labour for granted; effectively abusing it when it could have been smoother sailing without a huge giant "rolling over in bed", as it were.

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

sbb,

@davidrevoy Your artwork is great! How about one from Aesop's fables, featuring the lion taking his "lion's share"?

https://read.gov/aesop/141.html

Those who don't see any problem with Threads joining the Fediverse apparently seem to think that functioning-by-goodwill internet Federations grow on trees, and they aren't any sort of considerable loss if sidelined and subverted by the lions who know everything there is to know about taking their "lion's share".

sbb, to buddhism

Great video on the topic of loneliness:

"Are We the Loneliest Generation?"
https://youtu.be/I19btmIBhx0?si=gCp2C-8tZCX_RNgQ&t=159

I liked the part where the narrator distinguishes between loneliness - an unpleasant feeling of not being emotionally understood, or socially connected to - and being physically alone (not being around other people).

Solitude is not necessarily a bad thing, while on the flip-side, you can feel lonely even though you are around other people.

Compassion - karuna - has built into it a deep sense of acceptance and understanding directed towards the recipient, despite their flaws and foibles. It's possible to direct compassion towards oneself, and have a deep, heavenly peacefulness, whereby this need for being understood is quenched with that acceptance and understanding.

Compassion towards oneself is a powerful antidote to . Don't wait for others to be compassionate and empathetic towards you, should you not have enough of those people in your life. Fulfill your own need to be understood, by knowing and accepting yourself, all snug and cozy and warm in the glow of Brahmaviharic-grade compassion. It's tremendously therapeutic.

There's a nice walk around a large pond here in Taiping . It's called the "Raintree Walk", and there are birds who frequent the park, such as the "Intermediate Egret" (a white, crane-like bird), and just today, I saw two purple herons.

One of the locals tells me that the purple herons are a rare sighting.

Today I went to a Kathina in Penang at Sitavana forest monastery, which is a steep uphill 4x4 truck ride waaay up; would take a gruelling ~1 or 1.5 hours to walk up. The view at the stop was stunning. There were hundreds of attendees.

We are thinking of potentially moving development from Discord to another platform (Discord would remain as a community platform).

Do you have any recommendations for platforms and reasons why?

Examples of potential options are Discourse and Mattermost

sbb, (edited )

@veloren I've used Mattermost and Discourse a lot myself.

Mattermost makes sense when you want to use it like Slack - the thing it's a clone of. It's best used when you have little teams/subgroups of people tackling certain medium- to long-persisting areas of development or work, which are organized into "channels". Channels are sort of like "mega-threads." Each of these channels/mega-threads has a system of permissions on it as to who's allowed in, "pinned" posts, etc. The included "Boards" (kanban board feature) is additionally like Trello - great for making todo lists and tracking tasks, with comments, etc.

Discourse makes sense when it's a bunch of disjoint, random little questions about anything and everything (you know, "threads"), and there isn't any sense of coordinated teamwork.

Of the two, I prefer team server, because it's more lightweight (written in , will run even on a 4), and has a decent App with push notifications. has a less likeable mobile experience, IMHO.

Mattermost is for people who need to get a larger project (comprised of many sub-projects) done. Discourse is just for bantering forever on some broad, wide-open area of discussion, never converging on anything.
