The Joy of Writing When A Story Builds Upon Itself
One of the things I love about writing in my fantasy world is that the story ideas just seem to flow. I can be working on a story--for example the new serial I'm starting--and all of a sudden pieces begin falling into place. The short story that I've released for free (pick it up multiple places here), A Pony In Time,

spider in home

For Riparia Dellbane, more than any other protagonist I’ve ever written, this is quite simple.

Step 1: Frantic, she runs in blind panic for an unknown distance while beating at real & imaginary spiders she’s certain are on her until dropping from exhaustion.

Step 2: Her sympathetic horse brings her arachnophobic self home.

Step 3: Doppla then restrains her to keep her from burning the house to the ground.

CA_Hawthorne,
@CA_Hawthorne@writing.exchange avatar

@AlinaLeonova The life of an arachnophobic. This question coincided with editing one of the chapters when she’s having to cross the Null Forest.

It isn’t ideal. 🤣

Far, far worse awaits her at her destination, though. 😯

Advice I don't see often? Hmm.

Don't get attached to your writing. It's just words.

They might be words that are scraped from your soul, but ultimately, they're NOT YOU.

This means you should be able to separate critique of your words/writing/art from CRITICISM of your SELF.

Your writing will be stronger for the distance, and so will your psyche.

Also, stop sitting like a shrimp (stand up, twist around), have some water, and go pee.

@sfwrtr I haven't. I think you might be able to get a very rough version down, but not much more than the outline of a plot (a literal "vomit draft" as they say), so maybe a worthwhile exercise, but no real time to research characters' names, clothes, backgrounds, scenes, locations, themes etc. So that's anything historical out. And at say 90,000 words, that's 3,750 words per hour, 62.5 words a minute, so it'd be a pretty gruelling 24 hours!

Since we so often talk about the limits of automated technology/scripts/robots/AI, I present to you, this, what happened on Facebook when I mentioned I might need to "kill a darling" in my manuscript.

I cannot tell you how many actual homophobic, violent, racist, awful things pass my timeline. But this? This they flag.

Hey! What's that!

Then I'd try to escape because I know they all would kill me for all the things I've made them endure. The only possible exception could be the Old Hag, but I'm not sure she would say something in my defense. I took her beautiful and beloved lake and put "a damn city over it" =-|

Do you have advice for other authors that you haven't heard from different sources?

Every time you get edited, take a second to add things to a general list that have come up in the editing process. I call mine my "Foible List" to feel a bit better about it.

That way, post-draft, you can pull out that list and check all the things on it before you hand it to your editor. Saves time—and lets them find new mistakes you make instead of old ones! ;)

27 May: What would your ideal writing group be like?

I'll be honest, because my subject matter is steamy, I wouldn't be comfortable sharing it with a writing group.

I've been in a lot of writing groups over the years and they all worked differently. To be honest, as I and my friends have got older, we rarely have the time to do each other's work justice and enjoy the experience.

The ME/CFS unsurprisingly, also interferes. I can't go out and Zoom calls are overstimulating>

#wordweavers 01/05/2024 Introduce your setting as if it's a character in your story.

The McAlistair mansion POV: “I’m currently the host of Esther and her strange little maid. Before I belonged to Esther’s husband, but he wasn’t with them when they came back from the colonies. Something has happened there, I don’t know what, but it makes Esther ill. The little strange maid tries her best to help.”

28/05/2024 Did your MCs have comfort objects they carried as a child? Now?

Living in a family dominated by an abusive father, Esther certainly needs one. She can’t really escape him, but when she was riding her poney, at least she had a few moments of peace. That’s why finding her saddle makes her so nostalgic.
