The terms "right-wing" and "left-wing" came from the French revolution, where the right wing of congress supported the monarchy and feudalism, where the left wing advocated a transition of government towards liberalism (as defined by philosophers and economists like John Locke and Adam Smith) in advocacy towards a government of the people.
However, after the revolution, people realized that liberalism was just effectively reconstruction of feudalism, replacing rights through land property to rights and power through private capital instead, hence the word "capitalism" was adopted to make fun of liberalism. At this point, right wing, representing the conservative institutions of power came to advocate liberalism, and left wing took the same advocacy for the people in support of socialism.
Political philosophy is not a 'spectrum', to believe so is to be beyond politically illiterate. Political stances are analytic, defined by specific axioms that we assume. It is based on the axioms you choose to accept whether you are a liberal, a marxist, an anarchist, etc.
And yes, liberalism is fascist, or rather fascism is part of liberalism. If you read foundational liberal philosophy, you will see that fascism exists in support of some of those foundational axioms. Foundational neoliberal philosopher, Ludwig Von Mises pointed out that fascism's function is to act as a reaction-- a defense mechanism to the threat of socialist revolution-- and that's exactly all that it has ever been. Fascist Italy, fascist Germany, fascist Chile, fascist Argentina, etc. has ALWAYS been facilitated and utilized by liberal governments (most particularly the US) to maintain capitalism in power and fend off the threat of socialism and leftist revolution. Otherwise, fascism just acts the same way as the imperialism and colonialism (that liberal governments enact abroad) domestically.
