Unclean data in action: oh, you’ve never met a Nushi? Me either. But this database claims it’s the second most common given name in the world — because it’s Chinese for Miss/Madam

It’s understandable if weird artifacts like this slip in at , but #2? When you subtract the number of “Nushis” from China, there’s only a few hundred people named Nushi in the world. This doesn’t pass the most basic data health check imaginable, but they published it, it ranks highly on google, and doubtless it’s getting cited all over the place.

(hat tip to Soron for helping me diagnose the source of the fake name) https://forebears.io/earth/forenames

@0xabad1dea This is most probably AI to work, and many people believe that if AI wrote it, it must be true.

This will be -not so good- as soon as corporate AI starts advising people politically. (of course -seeing the US dominance on the web- all in a pro-US way)

TIL that Irasutoya, the cute free clip-art site, has an AI generator approved by the artist (prompting in English works fine) https://aisozai.com/irasutoya

This is pretty much the ideal usecase - an artist who has made thousands of visually coherent and labeled images that are intended for free public reuse and explicitly authorizes a model trained on them

NB: if I submit a prompt while the page is browser-translated to English, it immediately crashes. However, the images appear after a minute or so in the generation history.

irasutoya AI image with prompt: a Chinese princess dressed in traditional Tang dynasty attire stands gracefully by a serene water lily pond. The pond is adorned with vibrant pink and white water lilies, their petals delicately reflecting in the still water. Soft sunlight filters through the trees, casting a warm golden glow on the princess. She exudes elegance, her dress flowing gracefully around her. The scene is tranquil and evokes a sense of timeless beauty.

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@0xabad1dea The question is: is it humanly possible for an artist to creatively draw thousands of images?

When I was growing up, it seemed that consistently, all over the place, Burger King would very often get your fries upside-down in the bag and this rarely happened at McDonalds. Is this also your experience? [obviously I am looking for responses from people who live in places with both burger king and mcdonald’s]

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@0xabad1dea It probably just looks like that because Mc D uses a tool that 'slides' them in the bag (bottom down) and BK 'puts' them in the bag (top first)

If you enjoy using Fediverse groups powered by Guppe, you might want to donate to the volunteer group that makes Guppe's software and maintains the flagship server:

➡️ https://opencollective.com/guppe-groups

If you're a techy person, you might want to set up an alternative Guppe server to spread the load, so that we aren't totally reliant on a.gup.pe. Installation instructions here:

If you just want to know what the heck I'm talking about, see here:

@EU_Commission But has anybody asked themselves, do we actually need G5? With all the energy and money it costs to upgrade, wouldn't it be better to teach people how to just keep their current digital footprint and save resources and €200 billion?

For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

In , history and innovation meet at the Bourse!

A symbol of the 19th century, the former stock exchange was carefully restored with €18 million of EU funding to become a lively public space.

The main hall is now an important link in the city centre.

It offers spaces for exhibitions and attractions such as Belgian Beer World and the Bruxella 1238 archaeological site.

As per our sustainability targets, its restoration achieved a remarkable 30% cut in energy consumption.
