Another clanger from Microsoft -

  • zero day vulnerability being exploited in Windows OS for six months in the wild by North Korea

  • They didn’t tell anybody, took six months to make a patch

  • released the patch without saying what happened

  • didn’t mark it as a zero day in Microsoft Vulnerability Management

You’d think having the largest market cap in the world and having $2bn a year in revenue from security alone would allow.. uh.. investment.

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr This is where it shows that newer generations are learnign from older ones and start to break free.

Older generations aren't 'bad', they just got tought that way, like newer generations are now in a new way.

What if - hear me out -- what if we stopped tying people to trolley tracks and invested in public transportation?

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@MnemosyneSinger That would be a severe cut in autoindustry, leading to less insurencing, less oil/gas sales, less medicine sales/hospital care after car incidents, less conflicts in the middle east and less polution.

Not sure if the US might be ok with this.

I’m very concerned about Apple breaking the web by intentionally removing PWA features in the EU.

If we assume good intentions and the root issue is merely one of regulatory deadlines—an almost $3 trillion (USD) market cap company would make a plan to work with third-party browsers to add that compatibility back in (or at the very least provide APIs for others to do so).

But as far as I can tell they’re just removing the feature (only in the EU??) with no plan at all to add it back? yikes

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat How could anyone assume good intentions on a corporation, let alone a $3 trillion market-dominating one?

@rolle Looks interesting, though 10000 chars is a bit too much I think and invites people to write more detailed then needed.

On the other hand, I've been looking for a feature that would really be interesting: make a regional setting for the explore tabs.

Because here in the EU, 32 countries, and even on mastodon I still only get suggested US stuff, which is really annoying and kind of why I left regular social media. I could explain you more detail if you'd like.

@aires@tiggi.es avatar

Do you, or have you ever, used a graphical user interface? If you use , , or any version of with a window manager or desktop environment, you can thank Dr. Clarence "Skip" Ellis.

Dr. Ellis worked at Xerox PARC, the research organization that developed the modern GUI. Icons, windows, the mouse, Ethernet-based networking, laser printing - all of these (and more) came out of PARC. Dr. Ellis led the team that created Officetalk, the first program to use icons and the Internet. He got his start at 15 years old showing a local tech company how to reuse punch cards, which was a game-changer back in 1958.

Oh, and he was also the first black man to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

Why is center-left media toning down on these huge protests, they should be supporting it.

Bluff called.

“President Volodymyr has extended an invitation to Donald to visit Kyiv, with a specific condition attached.

@accretionist @GottaLaff In 2014 huge gas fields were found in the black sea. (UKRAINE..)

The US saw business (LNG) and went there, including their (social) media.

All of a sudden the president gets changed into a pro-american.. comedy actor?

Russia wants to get the US out of Kiev, because they know what time it is and so they march to Kiev to get the US out.

The US then starts the typical: Scream war, take resources, sell weapons blame neighbours, while swimming in profits.

stupidjim,
@stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

@w7voa Look, ABC is an american 'news' channel owned by Disney.

Disney is owned by investors who also invest in US arms corperations. They need to have a favour for Israel to keep bombing. That's how they make money.

Showing evidence that Israel is not allowed to bomb, means no more weapons sold, means no more profit.

You do the math.
