    If you are a citizen of any EU Member State, I implore you to consider signing the Tax-the-Rich citizens' initiative:
    https://www.tax-the-rich.eu/

    The idea is to tax the super rich and then use the money for climate transition. :blobcathappypaws:

    This is an official EU citizens' initiative, meaning that if it reaches certain thresholds, it will have to be considered by the EU institutions. That's a really powerful tool, if actually used.

    So we should use it. :blobcatcool:

    @rysiek There website has this question in the faq. :)

    It depends per country, as an example they state:

    "..In Belgium, for example, we propose that anyone with 1.25 million euros in assets in addition to their main home and business assets should qualify as "ultra-rich".

    Sounds like a good starter.

    @ncoca Here in EU the news is mostly from an american-corporate point of view, nothing to do with neutrality. It's a huge problem.

    Big news for any blind Mac users doing programming or scripting. The BBEdit text editor has been around for decades, but hasn’t been accessible. It is now. Auto-formatting, code folding, run external compilers, built-in GIT client, edit local and remote files, hex editor, on and on. Plus, integration with ChatGPT to assist with coding, if you want it. If you're a blind coder on Mac, it's way better than whatever it is you're using right now. https://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/index.html

    stupidjim,
    @stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

    @bryansmart It would be amazing if it weren't for this little thingy here: "integration with ChatGPT to 'assist' with coding."

    It will be writing all the code, copying from others, including the one who is using it. Making the whole editor useless, and paving the way for the ending of human coders.

    stupidjim,
    @stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

    @bryansmart 'Too bad for programmers'.

    Well that shows some of your personality. 'Sorry if I'm not sorry'.

    A thing 'AI' will not read for you is that it's not just affecting programmers, it's artists, engineers, medical people, librarians, bakeries, designers, shopping personal, supermarket employees etc. etc. Sorry for them too?

    The thing that gets this world in problems is that people tend to think only for themselves, because corporate tells them too, and people are too stupid to think.

    stupidjim,
    @stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

    @bryansmart Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm not trolling, just trying to get my idea through. But when you say stuff like 'too bad for programmers' it sounds like you just want to have things your way, no matter how it downsides others.

    And please skip the 'privilege' thing just because I'm giving criticism, that's just rude.

    Anyways, it sounds weird but I really had no offending intended, just discussing, have a good weekend.

    • about 210,000 km² below the 2010s mean
    • about 780,000 km² below the 2000s mean
    • about 1,460,000 km² below the 1990s mean
    • about 1,960,000 km² below the 1980s mean

    It's bloody unconscionable that Covid vaccines and things like Paxlovid are being privatized, after taxpayer money funded research and development. The correct price for a vaccine is $0. The correct price for Covid treatment in this, the fourth year of the pandemic, is $0.

    stupidjim,
    @stupidjim@mastodon.social avatar

    @lilithsaintcrow Every time you use a corporate product* you support investors.

    Investors use this money to lobby, to making privatizing happen.

    Stop using corporate products/free services and you stop investors from being able to privatize.

    It's that simple.

    Canada had our worst fire season ever recorded this year.

    Australia's fire season is just starting and it is devastating.

    The scale of fires in NW Australia is an area bigger than Western Europe has been on fire at some point over the last 6 weeks.

    Stay safe down under.

    The man-made climate breakdown is 1000 times more costly than getting off fossil fuels.

    If anyone’s curious, this is the master list of characters taught in a Chinese public school language arts textbook for the first half of first grade. The book uses some extra characters to express coherent sentences, but memorizing them is not required at this stage

    people have asked me if there’s anything weird and ideological in the book; now that I’ve read all of it I can say it’s 99% totally normal but there’s an uncomfortable reference to “sending a boat to Taiwan to pick up all the children so they can come play with us” and a song about how to show the flag respect which isn’t any more or less weird than how the Americans do it. Also I guess you can see Mao in the background here (last image) but the traditional costume spread is sick

    (it wouldn’t surprise me if some of these costumes represent groups who might resent the statement written in the upper right, “I am a Chinese person,” but I’m not qualified to say)

    second page of characters (sorry I’m not transcribing this)
    third page of characters (sorry I’m not transcribing this)
    a watercolor illustration of several dozen children in different traditional costumes from cultures presently considered part of China. Tiananmen is looming in the background

    If you poison the information pipeline to voters, you can kill democracy — it relies on informed consent of the governed, built on a shared sense of reality. That shared sense is splintering in ways that are tearing apart our societies, often based on widely held delusions. Musk made it way worse.
