Do you know someone with significant quality-of-life problems due to Long Covid?

Boosts appreciated.

At the same time that bad-faith "pollers" are asking about masking, the attendee survey asks about it as well. But that survey only goes to attendees, meaning people put off by the requirement this year will not be asked. How do we get a complete view of the entire population of potential attendees?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@nedbat I suppose one might be abstractly interested in what proportion of PyPeople are anti-science and willing to endanger their fellow humans, but empirically the answer is “small enough to not get in the way”, which is cheering.

On the ICC warrants for Hamas & Israeli leaders, one line of protest is that “Hamas are autocrats but Bibi is democratically elected.” Um, so what? Whatever you think of Israeli voting choices, only leaders can be held responsible for giving the orders amounting to “Go ahead, slaughter the innocents.” I honestly don’t get it.

timbray,

@JaneSmith I would shed no tears over the deaths of Hamas fighters or leaders. It’s the tens of thousands of innocents and starving children that are the war crime. There can never be any excuse for that. I think both sets of ICC warrants are highly appropriate.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@jake4good Not gonna shed a tear for any dead Hamasniks, but killing tens of thousands of innocents, starving children etc, those are still war crimes for which there can be no excuse. Both sets of warrants were appropriate.

Paywalled, but the funniest thing I’ve read in months. Also thought-provoking in its way: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/05/27/can-you-read-a-book-in-a-quarter-of-an-hour

what’s the best city to spend one month of your life walking around doing nothing much?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@lzg It needs to have some of (a) beach (b) moderate weather (c) excellent food (d) walkability (e) nearby nature (f) safe streets (g) good public transit.

This is why I chose to live in Vancouver, but thinking about Melbourne and Barcelona makes me smile. Surprised nobody mentioned Hong Kong (not now, a few years ago).

By the end of the day, the Karen Army Group is in control of the entire left bank of the Ayeyarwady bend; only about a third of the strength of the Nakhon Ratchasima Army Group managed to escape. Kashyap tells the troops this is the first time they do this well on the offensive.

People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@clive I both drive and e-bike often, sometimes both on the same day. I have not noticed a significant difference in the proportion of bad drivers vs that of bad bikers. Obviously bad drivers inflict a much higher cost in damage, injury, and death. The distinction between power-assist e-bikes and actual powered vehicles with a throttle is crucial. I see very few e-bikers going too fast, but I see scooters, hoverboards, and fat-tired powered-bikes going scary-fast regularly.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@clive And the environmental-cost trade-off is not remotely close. e-bikes are insanely less carbon-costly than EVs and of course ICE cars.

And, um, please try to avoid both-sides-ing this. I love my car, but increasing the proportion of travel that relies on e-bikes would be unambiguously good for the world and its people and other creatures.

Final point: E-bike is empowering for 60+ people like me.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@clive Fair enough. I look forward to reading it.

FWIW I occasionally see outbursts on social and mainstream media about the awfulness of reckless scofflaw cyclists, a threat to anyone on any sidewalk. On the occasions I've interacted with these people, 100% have been regular drivers who never cycle. Correlation != causation, but…

Anyhow, there are probably some relevant points here: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/What/The%20World/Micromobility/

@cheeaun Everything here is a matter of taste, no? Your presentation is definitely more information-dense, which is good (see Tufte). A lot of people won’t even notice but that’s OK.

BTW I notice that phanpy sometimes says "Home" and sometimes "Following" for the same thing. Should I file an issue? (I prefer Following but consistency is good.)

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@cheeaun
OK, I see, but the difference is subtle and I'm not sure people should be expected to understand. I really like “Following”.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@cheeaun It's an interesting problem. “Home” doesn’t say what it is, it says (sort of) where it is. It could reasonably be called “Start” or “Latest” something like that. “Following” does say what it is (I like that) and you’re right, Threads highlighted that. Except for I’m pretty sure that Threads “Following” page is still algorithmically modified, not just chronological.

E-bikes are very cool and I'm glad they are getting popular.

However.

There is a big difference between a crash at 12mph and one at 20mph.

Your ebike can give you injuries normally only found in motorcycle accidents. And there isn't enough advice on what constitutes sufficient maintenance for ebikes.

If you don't get balding tires fixed on a regular bike you could fall off and bruise or break a leg.

At ebike speeds that same fall will shatter your leg in dozens of pieces.

BE CAREFUL

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@futurebird Also bear in mind that bikes generally have poor braking power, terrifyingly poor on wet pavement.
