Flowers grown floating on polluted waterways can help clean up nutrient runoff and turn a profit

Flowers grown on inexpensive floating platforms can help clean polluted waterways, over 12 weeks extracting 52% more phosphorus and 36% more nitrogen than the natural nitrogen cycle removes from untreated water…

@mattcen My secret is that few of them post regularly. ;-)

I also have them split into categories. The 'Frequent' category includes things I check daily (news). Everything else is checked less often (weekly, as I have time to kill).

I'm looking forward to someone releasing an -enabled Ravelry-type thing.

It would be great to self-host and share craft projects more easily.

@vmbrasseur@social.vmbrasseur.com avatar

@ntnsndr No, I haven't. When they revamped the site they actively disregarded the harm the design brought to many community members (headaches, migraines), causing a schism in the Knitterverse. I'd rather we have a pure-FOSS option for sharing projects.

Who's self-hosting their repos and what are you using for that?

I'm checking out Flat (http://flat.app) and so far it's reminding me a lot of the good ol' days of Trello, before Atlassian evolved it to be Enterprise Grade Software.

Simple on the surface but complex when I need it (which is rarely). That's exactly what I’m looking for in a project management/kanban app. I'm optimistic about this one!

Black communities are using mapping to document and restore a sense of place

We have been working on the “Living Black Atlas,” an educational initiative that highlights the neglected history of Black mapmaking in America. It shows the creative ways in which Black people have historically used mapping to document their stories. Today, communities are using “restorative mapping” as a way to tell stories of Black Americans.

Uber’s Hidden Cost: The Surprising Truth Behind Tipping and Driver Pay

“…Uber is paying drivers less and people are tipping less than drivers have expected. That’s reduced driver pay, which encourages better drivers with other opportunities to leave the platform. They’re replaced by different drivers, and often less expensive, older, and less well-maintained vehicles. It’s one reason that the overall Uber experience has gotten so much worse.”

Nonwhite people are drastically underrepresented in local government

The people who serve in local governments – cities, counties and other entities below the state level – represent the vast majority of elected officials in the U.S. Recent research finds that, like in the federal and state governments, nonwhite people are drastically underrepresented in local government.

Why are so many robots white?

Problems of racial and gender bias in artificial intelligence algorithms and the data used to train large language models like ChatGPT have drawn the attention of researchers and generated headlines. But these problems also arise in social robots, which have physical bodies modeled on nonthreatening versions of humans or animals and are designed to interact with people.
