If you bought a car thing you should ask for a refund. If you didn't know, they're bricking every single one and sending tons and tons of e-waste to the landfill. It's truly despicable.

At least get your refund, go to their support chat and mention the car thing and a refund. The chat bot will say some crap, I just said "your chat bot did not answer my question", got a real person who asked for a receipt (should hopefully be in your email as a PDF from Spotify) and offered a refund.

Ten album co wydał zespół Bring Me The Horizon jest na prawdę dobry i podoba mi sie. Na pierwszym miejscu zawsze bedzie sempiternal...teraz tak mysle czy that's the spirit czy ten human lepszy 😃🤍

Why podcasters will want to own their podcast & followers:
https://x.com/ZwhiteHistory/status/1793689545067876841?t=t4G-YgPulBNWemEFSEYWBQ&s=19

TL;DR Podcaster published on Anchor, moved to another host and back (due to 'wrong download numbers'), in the process got locked out of their own podcast and lost 3k 'followers' on Spotify. If those folks had been subscribed to RSS in a proper app rather than follow through some proprietary system, there would've been much less damage. Lesson: don't tell people to follow on Spotify.

“The goal of our Car Thing exploration in the U.S. was to learn more about how people listen in the car.”

YOU just pay $90 dollars so WE can learn how to better sell you stuff.

The more I learn about this company, the less I want to use its services. Doesn’t seem like a company that respects the artists or its customers.

@ai6yr maybe they fired the team that worked on the software and they're going to shut down the servers rather than bother to do anything that costs money.

ai6yr,

@douglasvb Oh, I KNOW how that works, just saying if you were doing it right you'd not e-waste it all, and you'd make them usable to someone instead. (Of course, if it doesn't make the company money, they won't do it)

"Spotify is going to break every Car Thing gadget it ever sold / The dashboard accessory, which went out of production in 2022, will become e-waste at the end of this year. Spotify isn’t crediting or refunding customers."

@hund Making hardware unusable like this and refusing to unlock it should be banned. This company is basically disallowing users from re-purposing hardware, and straight out telling them to trash it -- even though it's perfectly good hardware that has nothing broken. They've simply decided that it can't be used any more.

It was pretty clear Spotify was iffy on its streaming-to-automobiles accessory when the company gave it the bland name of "Car Thing." It launched in Feb 2022 and was discontinued months later. Now Spotify is planning to brick existing units in December, 2024. https://buff.ly/44QP0ex #CarThing #Spotify #InternetOfShit

@postmarketOS
This seems like a great opportunity for your devs to ask people for their spotify car thing instead of throwing it away since it can be unlocked and someone could definitely port postmarketOS to it: https://oddsolutions.github.io/Spotify-Car-Thing-Root/
This could prevent a lot of unnecessary ewaste and you could even make it run spotify.

postmarketOS,

@DenJohn best we can do is boost for reach. But in the grander scheme of things there probably aren't that many of these in the wild...

Spotify is finding new ways to weasel out of paying artists.

Now the MLC (Mechanical License Collective) is suing Spotify.

People say that the sound quality in Apple Music is way better than in Spotify. What is the technical explanation here?
It can't be a problem of the encoding pipeline. This problem has been solved decades ago.

obrhoff,
@obrhoff@chaos.social avatar

@nighthawk Might be a good explanation, but would this not mostly apply to older music that got remastered or what's the difference between a normal master and an Apple digital master?

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@obrhoff Good question. There’s this document from Apple but I personally don’t have enough knowledge to assess it: https://www.apple.com/apple-music/apple-digital-masters/docs/apple-digital-masters.pdf

I'd appreciate if you could share this around. As someone opposed to for a dozen reasons there was only that was semi-ethical & gave musicians a fair deal. Bandcamp is under new ownership, had big layoffs, changed their terms & are starting playlists (likely to fill with AI music?). Thankfully coops such as Mirlo offer a place to share our music that doesn't simply enrich dubious tech giants.

@media_dept I note with some amusement that all the Bandcamp nut-riders have suddenly achieved en masse radio silence. For all that, I hope Miro is a big success.
