Google lards its search results with paid links.

Alexa won’t speak ill of Amazon.

Facebook and TikTok manipulate the content they show you.

It’s reasonable to expect that assistants sold by these or other tech companies will steer you to the products and services that make the most profit for the tech companies.

And users have no way of knowing whose interests are being favored, or how they are being data-mined.

Hey, at least we know whose interests are favored with "The company formerly known as Twitter", that monkey is quite transparent!

@TheConversationUS Oh, no fair! This is an actual real present-day danger! We want our AI risks to be like in the movies!

It never occurred to me that it would be any other way.

@TheConversationUS And Spotify and Apple Music have both been caught changing songs in subscribers’ libraries from album versions that cost more to stream, to soundtrack versions (of the same song) that cost less to stream.

Unrelated to AI, but still on track with corporations putting profit before people.

Tanath,

@TheConversationUS at least Google's sponsored links are labelled as such.

@TheConversationUS I think a good start might be to stop calling LLMs "AI" when they are not by any definition.

@TheConversationUS Also, you shouldn't trust it because it's not AI, it's ALL hallucinations, just sometimes they can be forced for a while to match up with reality. But there's no intention there, no intelligence, no reasoning, just a really good model for simulating plausible autput.

And we have to wait for the EU to demonstrate how to regulate destructive oligarchs since North American forgot what democracy is

jobsboils,

@TheConversationUS

Google's made a slight modification to its old informal slogan.
