Pollen in Luxembourg, the birch count is frightening (as I'm allergic, it's not a great time at the moment).

Does anyone know anything about 'standard' pollen concentrations? Do trees release more pollen to increase* their chances of survival in a world in climate crisis?

*During a presentation with the Directeur de l'Administration de la nature et des forêts in Luxembourg in 2022, I discovered that the same oak tree could have different genetic material depending on its branches, to increase its capacity to adapt (spatial orientation and climate impact). Nature never ceases to amaze me.

@thepoliticalcat I did a bit of research this morning and apparently there's a link between carbon concentration and pollen concentration. I'd like to understand the mechanism better.

@thepoliticalcat "Scientists say intensified seasonal allergies are among the first wave of anticipated health impacts from global warning, along with greater exposure to infectious diseases. (...) There’s some evidence that increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are making pollen more potent, too."

@MarieVC @thepoliticalcat really interesting. Thank you for sharing here

@pvonhellermannn I think the hashtag is a really good place to unite, to confront the climate crisis but also the solutions. Thank you for setting it up.

@MarieVC @pvonhellermannn Yep! While I do not write a lot there, mainly because most of it is so bleedin' obvious, I do read it.

@MarieVC @pvonhellermannn P.S. Just to clarify, by obvious, I mean we do have multiple feckin planetary scope crisis events, and a counter ticking in front of our eyes, while the free market-Taliban, reactionary and populist forces in politics (which sadly is a majority) sabotage close to every required action.

I often wonder whether they do have a death wish.

@Unknowable @MarieVC yes… I don’t know, probably not conscious but it may be there. Or maybe it’s just that short termism is really huge in all of us- in our instincts, political structures, economy, everything.

On : thank you! I love reading many posts together. Like yesterday, yours on rising allergies, right next to one about someone finding a baboon in their kitchen in South Africa, due to shrinking habitats - the two together really made me think.

@MarieVC I have read many times that pollen is worse with warming climate, e.g.

    Sorry you're suffering!
