@rm4 It is freemium. Free with all functionality, but with ads. You can pay $20 to remove them permanently, and that seems to be what Lemmy objects to. He also has a subscription tier that gives you cloud backup/sync and a couple other niceties.
Except it's literally just ONE guy keeping the whole thing going, and there are only about 100k active daily Lemmings. A dude's gotta eat, and I honestly don't see an issue with paying $20 for literal years of scrolling.
@thicmuscle@TheTurboDiesel Yeah the Fediverse in general and Lemmy don't have ads - the Sync developer is adding Google Ads to their freemium app and charging $22 for the premium no-Add version
@rm4@thicmuscle yep. I don't really see an issue with it honestly. Lemmy (and Mastodon) are only ad-free because they rely on user revenue; as a single dev he doesn't have that revenue stream, so he made a freemium app (and this is the important part) because the users requested it. I don't think there's an issue with asking to be paid for his work.
It's not like there aren't other Lemmy apps, but honestly they're mostly hot garbage.
