People try to add "following" UX to the Fediverse.

I think we should go the other way.

We should remove (some) following UX.

Either that, or my brain is still stuck in the year 2007.

@manlycoffee how so? I'm curious what exactly this means?

@thisismissem from personal experience, the follow button was slightly misleading and confusing, when attempting to follow someone on a different Mastodon server.

I tend to read left to right, so the first thing that pops out when attempting to follow someone on a different site is some big "SIgn In or Create Account" call-to-action.

With RSS, a lot of blogs would either link you to their RSS URL, which you can then copy the URL on the address bar, and paste into your RSS reader, or tell you to copy the URL that pops up on their page, and paste it into your RSS reader.

It was unambiguous.

It pretty much clearly implied to me "hey, if you want to keep updated, subscribe to the RSS feed on your own RSS reader (rather than sign up for our site with a username and password)"

@manlycoffee that whole interaction model is changing in 4.2, try it out on mastodon.social atm.

@thisismissem definitely better.
