you are on flipboard.social instance. there are many different instance types. not really sure how posts make it over ActivityPub but mastodon used to have a 'fediverse' view that scrolled posts by faster than was useful. hashtags are used/followed.
@janettespeyer Basically, if you follow a person on Mastodon from your chosen instance, you can see that person on the home timeline no matter what software you use.
I feel these tips give more info if you want to check it out:
it isn't so much that you're following on the software of another instance, but your instance does, in a way, tell the one you're following that you're doing so, so it knows to publish to your subscription.
the Mastodon protocol is based on a concept of "pub-sub"; you're basically subscribing to someone's newsletter, but you get to interact with them if they subscribe to yours back. the subscriptions being delivered is what Mastodon does.
