General question about the #fediverse and #mastodon: I see most instances end with some cute #TLD like .social or .city or .town. Is there any reason not to use a domain that is .org or .net or .xyz? Is that like having a aol.com email address or something?
@trashrobot No technical reason. Many of the sites on blocklists for terf/nazi behavior are .xyz - not sure what that's about. Otherwise I'd guess we're just generally at the point where old TLDs have less available, so people looking for nice handles lean into new TLDs. That's the only reason we're .social
