> Every day, the world’s developers balance an unsustainable demand to both modernize the legacy code of yesterday and build our digital tomorrow. It is our guiding conviction to make it easier for developers to do it all, … with GitHub Copilot deeply integrated into the developer experience.

So without blinking: capitalism is killing you, so we went ahead and made that easier and faster.

@maegul @aral Yay for progress!

@aral God damnit.

@aral "Today, GitHub Copilot applies an LLM-based vulnerability prevention system that blocks insecure coding patterns in real-time to make GitHub Copilot’s suggestions more secure. Our model targets the most common vulnerable coding patterns, including hardcoded credentials, SQL injections, and path injections."

...I'm pretty sure my Python or PHP linters have been able to do this for years without requiring the computing power of an LLM. This really is the carcinization of deoptimization.

sokkemane,

@aral are you guys forced to use the rebranded Clippy feature or whats the fuss about it? Am I missing something crucial?

john,

Here @aral is providing another crystal clear example of why open source and strong privacy laws are necessary to protect free as in beer and free as in everything else, too!

@aral

They seem to be missing the information "All your code will be licensed under AGPLv3".

tsadiq,
@tsadiq@rivals.space avatar

@aral yet another open source git hoster, what's wrong with gitlab? 😐

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@tsadiq I guess they didn’t get the memo that there could only be one.

tsadiq,
@tsadiq@rivals.space avatar

@aral nah, that's not what i mean, but if you're going to suggest some open-source replacement to github, why not promote one that already has all the features?

kkarhan,

@aral thx but fails for me espechally.

I do however consider moving to any option that does work and provides the same amount of DDoS protection and bandwith amd useability.

@aral
TIL is the git hosting service I've been looking for. Lightweight, open source, clean.

@aral Software developing software... - not really sure if this is a good idea. Who knows what will come next.

@aral Is Codeberg production-ready now?

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@kevin I’ve been using it as the primary remote for my projects for a while now. They have had hiccups in the past but it’s been smooth for a while now.

kevin,
@kevin@dice.camp avatar

@aral I tried using it a few months ago and they were asking people to not use it due to instability and capacity. I'll have to revisit.

But keep an eye on
https://status.codeberg.org and expect disruptions this coming Sunday: "We are scheduling system upgrades with elevated risk on Sunday, November 12 during about 10 - 23 CET" (CET = UTC+1).

I noticed about 1-2 hours of downtime once in the last 12 months or so.

Codeberg's budget is something like 1,000,000,000 (or so) times less than that of MS. Sell your yacht or helicopter and donate the $$ to Codeberg, and it might become microscopic instead of nanoscopic.

dpwiz,
@dpwiz@qoto.org avatar

@aral Federated forges can’t come soon enough…

stew_sims,
@stew_sims@mastodon.social avatar

@aral I find the examples of what it can do pretty lame.

Surely, if we're going to entertain the idea of AI massively increasing productivity in software development, we need to consider the creative aspect of coding.

For example on a macro level suggestions for the steps to modify a codebase to implement a particular feature. Or automating away laborious code changes across an entire codebase.

Beyond a basic level of creativity, 'generative' AI usually fails.

jonasvautherin,

@aral As another alternative, I started using and the git email workflow, and I really like it.

WhyNotZoidberg,
@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

@aral Observation from a non-developer: just reading that blog it seems whoever writes it insists on mixing up "GitHub" the platform and "Developers" the profession with headlines like "Developers adapt AI" etc.

mathieucomandon,

@aral github is just a git remote and free bandwidth to host binaries. We're not migrating to some other service that would probably not offer massive amounts of storage while disrupting years of issue tracking just because MS is running out of ideas to implement. That would be shooting ourselves in the foot.

arch,
@arch@floofy.tech avatar

@mathieucomandon @aral Yeah it’s tough. GitHub operates at a stupid scale that the likes of Codeberg can’t match. I’ve seen conversations around moving nixpkgs to Coderg or a self hosted Forgejo instance but logistically it’s impossible without a larger company sponsoring the technical work and costs.

@aral Codeberg is great. But a honourable mention has to go to Gitlab if you ask me. It has all the relevant features, a solid UI and does no weird stuff. :)

digitalCalibrator,
@digitalCalibrator@neovibe.app avatar

@aral codeberg? Oh, the site that wouldn't let me use my github oauth because that account uses my gmail. All I wanted to do was submit a bug report to a repo. I tried to request manual confirmation, but never got a response. 🤷‍♀️

@aral Am I the only one who is more peed off that everyone is copying Apple's "here's everything new in boxes" presentation style than about the actual product?

konstantin,

@aral Mozilla really missed an opportunity to remind the world their slogan is not just marketing but they decided to go GitHub anyway. Nothing against GitHub but it’s the opposite of “fair and open” and “people powered”.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@konstantin So is Mozilla, which only exists thanks to half a billion dollars from Google every year, has a venture capital arm, and an AI programme of its own. As their head of public policy once told me: “Aral, we’re just another Silicon Valley tech company, I don’t understand why you’re holding us to a such a higher standard.”

konstantin,

@aral So well said! zilla is like one of those Easter decorations someone forgot in store front that's lost its colours from the sun - you can't even read what it says any more, a clutter you don't notice unless you focus really hard.

gunchleoc,
@gunchleoc@mastodon.scot avatar

@aral When people copy/paste code from Stackoverflow, they at least have the option of reading the comments and having some context to it, and alternative suggestions to choose from.

Good luck finding any bugs that this AI thing produces. You'll need code reviewer level skills for that while not really learning anything to actually acquire those skills.
