My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

We should all contribute to a global, distributed, federated, and resilient database, keeping a disk at home and (securely!!) sharing it with the world.

I wonder if the technology is already there?

TIL: 0,6 to 2,3% of US electricity usage is evaporated into cryptocoin stuff. That's about the same ballpark as electricity used to run the rail networks in Switzerland (2,8%) or Germany (~1%). Couldn't find figures for the US as just one percent of their rail network is electricified.
We all make choices, I guess.

@nblr Can you get the same numbers for AI and web searches?

At the end of a search, or AI query we should get:

Your request spent:
X KWh
Y CO2 (from the energy and servers used)
Z m2 (related to the space used by the servers involved)
+W C increase in mean global temperature

The is no way to edit or remove questions. The is no way to talk to anyone... A normal "trust" fail, except this time it is a hardcoded due to the use of this CMS for the event. Before this we used with which worked well, then silos that worked after a fight each time to get chat turned on, now we are here , every tech event has pushed this "control" mess over the public. What are you guys in "control" going to do to stop this.

REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

A thing I keep wondering about as a non-lawyer.

So we know that was absolutely trained on GPLed code.

My naive understanding is that therefore any code Copilot generates could be (at least partially) derivative and would need to be GPLed. Where am I wrong?

Takahē is a new kind of Fediverse server which is aimed at small to medium size servers. It's unusual as it allows the same server to host multiple domains, and allows each user to have multiple identities. You can find out more from the project's official website at:

One tool we have at work to ablate harassment is a set of tags for our public issue tracker - “abuse” and “admin” that summon a mod within the hour; what we tell people is, if it’s obviously abusive, tag it as such, but if it’s on the line, or you’re not sure, or you’re just uncomfortable and thinking “I want somebody who isn’t me to deal with … whatever this is”, use the admin flag.

Under the hood both tags do exactly the same thing, but:
