Now for a different take on decentralization and mastodon: Mastodon Is Doomed: https://justingarrison.com/blog/2023-04-24-mastodon-is-doomed/

Polychrome,

@hj @boilingsteam me on my years old low budget Pleroma/Akkoma instance running on the electronic equivalent of a potato:

:pcpleroma: :meowtea: sure thing, mate.

hj,
@hj@shigusegubu.club avatar

@Polychrome @boilingsteam not even that, like, even if instances die, even big ones, the network remains, and people can migrate

Polychrome,

@hj @boilingsteam it sucks when that happens but I learned not to take fedi too seriously or treat it like a cultural archive. Posts here are meant to be eventually ephemeral and that's fine.

@Polychrome @boilingsteam that's a good lesson, the thing is that "mastodon is doomed" is pretty much same as "twitter is doomed". Things are born and things die, so it's important to pass on the DNA. For us it's the ActivityPub (and OStatus). Twitter doesn't have exit strategy, no DNA to pass on, no legacy, just tiny fragments of it. Cathedrals crumble, but bazaars pop up and close, and are ever-shifting. Much like merchants on bazaars are driven by desire for profit, we on fediverse are driven by desire to shitpost.

@boilingsteam Eh. They said the exact same things six years ago and last year. They say the same things every time there's a jump in users.

dreamLogic,

@boilingsteam Good article, but there are two typos. Please people, for the love of all that is holy run at least a spell check on your blog posts before pushing it out to the public.

@dreamLogic not our article but yes

Yeah, and so is the universe if you wait long enough.

Reminds me of Linux on the desktop. A failure for decades-- but I've only been using Linux for my desktop for decades.

This'll be the same, possibly. People complaining about being pushed around vendors, but choosing to stay in jail even when the cell door is left wide open.

@boilingsteam what are your opinion on this? @cwebber

cwebber,

@Madagascar_Sky @boilingsteam mastodon isn't doomed it's crumbling

Madagascar_Sky,
@Madagascar_Sky@mastodon.social avatar

@cwebber @boilingsteam So, what do we do? What can we do to save it? Or do we let it die and migrate to other fediverse apps?

cwebber,

@Madagascar_Sky @boilingsteam I don't think these kinds of posts are super helpful. I think a lot of the criticisms are valid and I agree with most of them but I hate the headline and I hate the framing.

Regardless, the fediverse is bigger than mastodon so it's not really my area to comment on.

I agree there are a lot of serious issues with the fediverse as rolled out, you'll find me all over the place saying so. I've even written a lot about how to do it. Even some demos, Golem was one. https://gitlab.com/spritely/golem/blob/master/README.org

My current work is over at Spritely, so I mostly ignore posts like these, and especially when people send them to me. But "X is doomed/dead/crumbling/etc", it's really easy to make that kind of title, and it actually distracts from legitimate criticism that an article may contain imo. Makes me disinterested in it, at least.

@boilingsteam@mastodon.cloud avatar

@cwebber @Madagascar_Sky the headlines are mostly for clicks I think

@cwebber @Madagascar_Sky @boilingsteam

They're conflating Mastodon with the Fediverse, and in the worst way:

Will there be simpler and cheaper options? I don’t think so. Mastodon growth is already starting to plateau. All of the 3rd party integrations are happening with ActivityPub, not Mastodon.

Mastodon - the App - was meant to be only one of many. It was never meant to be a monopoly. We already have different applications and servers not running Mastodon - the fediverse is thriving and growing. But the general idea is tha Mastodon as most people understand it ("the Fediverse") is doomed, and that's being fucking dishonest.

cwebber,

@Madagascar_Sky @boilingsteam For reference, the source of the joke is "Mastodon is Crumbling", a post made in 2019, widely circulated, also with many valid criticisms https://www.dailydot.com/debug/mastodon-fediverse-eugen-rochko/

But it looks kind of like a joke with that title now. Has the last four years been a crumble?

@boilingsteam Yep, we need a good ActivityPub app written in , but not like lemmy.

The truth to me is that it's about costs and tradeoffs.

The risks of, say, an instance shutting down are significant, but it's worth it to me for the freedom from the so-called "walled gardens", but I know I'm an outlier: I'm an autistic, ADHD person who was homeschooled... The things that appeal to me and work for me frequently are not mainstream things.

You're right: Mastodon cannot replace Twitter because it is NOT actually what many Twitter users want or will use.
