Fascism is hate.
Give dogs the attention they need.
Listen to music.
Eat the rich.
Vote, vote, vote.
Be skeptical.
Consider the source.

I don't like to generalize, but at this point the GOP, Republicans, are Nazis. Nazi positions and Nazi tactics. If you support them, you are too. You want Nazis? This is how you get Nazis.

Apparently Hitler's rise was financed by the stupid rich, too.

Yes, I'm in the USA, and it is pissing me off.

We need to talk about data centres.

For the 2nd or 3rd time this week I've seen someone comment on a new data centre build with a stat about how 80% of data is never accessed. Then they talk about the energy and cooling used in modern DCs.

The reality is that data storage is actually incredibly efficient, and uses fuck all power. A hard disk is less than 10w and stores multiple users data.

Storing data, our photos, our memories, our history. Is not the problem.

What is? 1/n

In spite of, or perhaps also because of, all the carping and contentions in the comments, many of which have good points, as does this thread of posts, I think it is all, posts and comments, well worth reading.

I would wish for better tone in some of the comments; I think more "yes, and" than "no, but" would be more appropriate.

    "Old" does not equal "deep." If you had no depth in youth, you'll have no depth in older age.

    @StillIRise1963

    I have to disagree, you can become either deeper or more shallow with experience, practice, or thought, or the lack. Your starting point may make it harder or easier to make or surrender progress.

    ponyponypony,
    @ponyponypony@mas.to avatar

    @StillIRise1963

    Not this:
    "Old" does not equal "deep".

    This:
    If you had no depth in youth, you'll have no depth in older age.

    How do you acquire depth over time starting from, zero depth on day one, why is there an age after which you can't acquire depth, and what age is that?

    Imagine being so teeny tiny that you are an endoparasite on leafhoppers

    Leafhoppers are already in the "so small they go unnoticed" category, and you're just a little pest on a minuscule thing.

    Of course the group that's most likely to choose this life? The wasps.

    Wasps are some of the smallest insects. There are "fairy flies" that are parasites of the eggs of certain insects.

    They are so small that air is "thick" to them and their wings have feathered edges are are oar shaped.

    Why are so many American pedestrians being killed by car-drivers at night?

    Fascinating piece in the New York Times (free link here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/11/upshot/nighttime-deaths.html?unlocked_article_code=1.FE0.uEMf.FuV3jZhYzZHu&hpgrp=k-abar&smid=url-share) on this question

    After years of decline, the number of pedestrians killed by drivers began to rise in 2008 -- but only at night

    No-one's quite sure why

    Embiggified vehicles don't seem to be the cause ...

    ... though distracted driving does seem to be part of it

    Also: more people living alongside massive highway-esque suburban roads

    Had an "oh my god" moment just now when, on upgrading to iOS 17, I opened Notes and saw new tools to play with.

    I'm freaking out. The crayon and watercolor especially are going to be game-changing.

    Best part: this toolset works on attachments now. That means I can zoom while drawing, which is key to the process as some of you know.
