Welcome to Autumn 2023 Day 08, 8 Sep, London - Paris – Nuits-sous-Ravières

Today I’m crossing these borders

St Pancras tip. Want a place for a coffee? Go up to platform level and it’s calm. While it’s bedlam on the ground floor.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Regent’s Canal earlier

FiveSeventeen,
@FiveSeventeen@bahn.social avatar

@jon don't drink the water.

I used to live near Regents Canal, and also near Camden Lock. It was beautiful and clean back then.

Martinned,

@jon At least it's not completely green, like other areas.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Ticket gate, bag scan, UK passport check and France passport check took 17 mins total. The French passport check was the bottleneck.

But because Eurostar advises arriving 90 mins ahead the terminal is heaving with people.

I reckon arriving 45 mins before us the sweet spot now at St Pancras. Enough time to get through, but minimises time after security - where you might not get a seat.

slateroni,
@slateroni@norden.social avatar

@jon been there as well a couple of weeks ago - all beauty of rail travel lost in an overcrowded, underground waiting hall. If it was an airport, one could at least watch arriving and departing planes.

MartinJBreen,

@jon it’s more like a Hunger Games scenario where you hunt in fierce competition for a seat

acb,
@acb@mastodon.social avatar

@jon That assumes predictability of queue times. I’ve had times when I arrived 90 minutes early and barely made it

Alon,
@Alon@mastodon.social avatar

@acb @jon This is the worst when ridership is highest. I was in line for a while when I was traveling during the summer peak in 2018; they ended up giving up on reservations and just let passengers on trains on a first-come, first-on basis, since everything was an hour+ late anyway.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@acb those passengers were allowed to go ahead.

to_lnr,

@jon @acb Eurostar has just opened a mini lounge which you can access if you don't have too much luggage. It's nested in between the arrival corridors near the platform end. They take you out of the main queue and send you to a side door to the left of the ticket offices... More seating space, quicker and free bottles of water (as there is no café).

TimWardCam,
@TimWardCam@c.im avatar

@jon Gotta maximise the spread of covid some how, jamming hundreds of people together in a space they can't get out of for an hour and a half sounds like a good effort.

zomtecos,
@zomtecos@zmtdn.de avatar

@jon Brexit. Such a good idea.

kaszeta,
@kaszeta@mas.to avatar

@jon Yeah, Eurostar at St Pancras manages to accidentally recreate much of the "airport" experience, which is a shame, it's actually a nice station outside the not-enough-seats waiting area.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Eurostar wifi: it doesn’t work even when the train is stationary in St Pancras

Dasy2k1,

@jon not sure it works in the UK anymore with the international agreements between telecoms companies disappearing with brexit

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Dasy2k1 According to their portal it is supposed to work in UK still

c_chep,
@c_chep@piaille.fr avatar

@jon @Dasy2k1 yeah there are a few droplets of signal, like in the first 200m past the first 50m after St Pancras, and then a couple hotspots which you whiz by in a few seconds each.

Apparently British telcos fail to understand the concept of "antennas in a tunnel" or "cell coverage in Kent".

It's slightly less shitty (but still a lot) using 4G, but not by any appreciable much.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@jon I see the Thalys merger is going as planned.

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon I was going to ask if it ever did, but then I remembered before Brexit it even worked in the car train while it was under the Chanel.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@skolima it’s always been crap. This isn’t Brexit related.

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon Different service for LeShuttle then? There's a 5 year gap between me being on that and me taking the Eurostar so I can't compare directly. But for LeShuttle the WiFi worked very well.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@skolima I assume they have different providers?

nothingtolius,
@nothingtolius@h-net.social avatar

@jon I’m surprised the LTE passthrough worked.

clanwilliam,
@clanwilliam@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon It does work the other way, up until you leave the tunnel. I regularly publish news stories under the sea, much to various reporters’ amusement.

ScottAS2,
@ScottAS2@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon Someone obviously forgot to plug in the wifi cable when the train arrived.

Island_Martha,
@Island_Martha@epicure.social avatar

@jon
Is it always this crowded - or is this tourism season over-kill?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Island_Martha Rugby World Cup in France. Friday. Three trains departing in 1 hour. It all adds up.

Island_Martha,
@Island_Martha@epicure.social avatar

@jon
Yes, that makes sense. Wales are playing Fiji on Sunday

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Siemens Velaro / Eurostar e320 suspension bottoming out on the HSL between Calais and Lille… Siemens train + French high speed track laid to less stringent standards than German HSLs… 😳

to_lnr,

@jon I seem to remember that on this part of the high speed line there were some 'marais', basically the earthworks are shifting!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@to_lnr I thought that was south of Lille? Or were there multiple places it is shifting?

to_lnr,

@jon possibly! I think I was told by Eurostar onboard staff at the time!

PGLux,

@jon

No wonder, there have been countless complaints as to the ride quality of E320s.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PGLux it’s better than a DB 406. But it’s nowhere near as good as an Alstom TGV here.

PGLux,

@jon

Pity that Alstom claimed so much for maintainance of the AGVs proposed to Eurostar in 2010. That was the main reason why Siemens was preferred.

Track on Lille-Calais has not yet been renewed since EIS (1993). That is due from 2025.

mfierst,
@mfierst@mstdn.social avatar

@jon
"Shaken, not stirred" like a famous cocktail? 🤭

maartje,

Autumn 2023 Train 18
EST 9024

🛜: ❓ (supposed to be, but seldom works)
🍽️: ✅

Borders crossed: Calais-Fréthun 🇫🇷 - Ashford International 🇬🇧

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Soooo… my trip to Winterswijk 21 Sept is off. Which means I’ve got 2 extra Interrail days

Where should I go? 🤔

I’ve never been to Villa Opicina (Italy-Slovenia border) - should I aim for that? Other suggestions very welcome!

K1ngdaKa88,
@K1ngdaKa88@zug.network avatar

@jon the Villa Opicina Border felt kinda weird with my EC in terms of operation.
I was in the EC Vienna - Triest.
From Vienna to Ljubljana we hat ÖBB Taurus pulling.
From Ljubljana to Villa Opicina a slovenian loco.
And the last 30min to Triest again an ÖBB Taurus.
And on the last stretch the train manager was someone from ÖBB Cargo 🤔😅
And I remember it not having lots of trains at that border and this 3 coach EC was pretty empty.
But the route is quite scenic! 😇

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@K1ngdaKa88 Right. Exactly why I want to go 😃 It’s odd but should be better!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Also relating to the Siemens Velaro Eurostar e320 not being very smooth on French track at 300km/h, how are other non Alstom / non articulated designs?

How is Hitachi Frecciarossa 1000? Or in the future how will a Renfe Talgo 106 be? 🤔

PGLux,

@jon

Was the track quality on Lille - Gonesse as bad as on Calais - Lille?

Most of Gonesse - Lille has been thoroughly renewed since 2015 (completion due next year)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PGLux Lille-Gonesse much better!

PGLux,

@jon

Lille - Calais should be complete by 2027, as ECTS has finally been deployed BTW.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon Being a collaboration between Bombardier and Ansaldo-Breda, I imagine the ETR 1000 to be outright scary.

PGLux,

@partim @jon

TI passengers haven't voiced any complaints as to ride quality of LGV PSE.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @jon I remember the (single-deck) TGV being pretty rough on that line.

PGLux,

@partim @jon

PSE stock had a rougher primary suspension than all subsequent TGV fleets.

However, the worst LGV section used to be on LGV NE, between Roye and Bapaume, owing to former WW1 battlefields.

There was a derailment in late-1993, and the ride quality had become so bad in the late-90s that passengers started being scared with it

That led to severe speed restrictions from 2004, and to 2 good years of thorough trackbed consolidation works.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@partim in Italy it’s impeccable. Really. Excellent train.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon I might have to break my No Frecce rule on the upcoming trip and give it a try.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@partim Frecciarossa 500s and 1000s are excellent. Anything else - anything tilting, or the ex-Fyra ones, those aren't so great.

PGLux,

@partim @jon

You should break your rule, both ETR-500 /1000 are very good designs.

ETR-500, while having no pneumatic suspension, has an outstanding ride quality.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @jon The rule is not because the trains are bad but because trains with mandatory reservation have a tendency to make me grumpy. You end up in a near 100% full carriage in a backwards seats with an obstructed window and no chance to flee.

At least in Italy you can get out of this mess by being slow – although I suspect timetables in the south are a bit more French then I would like.

PGLux,

@partim @jon

Frecciarossa runs on high-frequency timetable...

    @Peternimmo The air con works very well in this one ☺️

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    I’m intrigued by the laziness of train passengers. This train composed of 2 units is just over 200m long. At the station end it was standing room only 10 mins before departure. At the front I have 4 seats to myself. I’d walk the 200m for this every time. But clearly many would not.

    TimWardCam,
    @TimWardCam@c.im avatar

    @jon Depends how long you're going to be on the train, where you're getting off, and where the exit from the platform is? Some people might prefer to stand by the door they want to exit from in eight minutes' time.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @TimWardCam No stations have exit right at the back. And the first stop is Sens - 70 mins into the journey. Even were your exit theory correct, I would still walk at departure and destination to get a seat for >70 mins!

    TimWardCam,
    @TimWardCam@c.im avatar

    @jon 😂

    The theory might be correct for some commuter routes though.

    PGLux,

    @jon @TimWardCam

    Any annoucements made by the guard as to the availability of seats in the front EMU?

    wildrikku,
    @wildrikku@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @jon And this is the good way - the bad is when you have been in the train before it fills and then lazy passengers will block the ways. I really don't get how standing on a moving train is better than moving through the train even with luggage. But then again, there's also a lot of people carrying luggage way heavier than they can lift.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    My all the borders map has been updated, inc. the 7 lines I have visited for the first time this week, and 1 - the channel tunnel - that has changed from orange (been there before) to pink (been there during my projects

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @herr_schaefer Yes. But I have only 9 minutes for the change! (I then take a RE to Frankfurt)

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @herr_schaefer I ought to be in Saarland again this autumn sometime though!

    wupatz,
    @wupatz@berlin.social avatar

    @jon umap is a great tool. Got french public funding a few weeks ago. If you could, what border station attributes would you think helpful to publish right in the map and be searched by users?

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @wupatz ooh interesting. You want more infra attributes (like voltage or signalling) or human use (like disabled access of stations)?

    wupatz,
    @wupatz@berlin.social avatar

    @jon last time I checked out https://bahnreise-wiki.de/wiki/Grenzbahnh%C3%B6fe was to know how I far could get with a Global Pass into my origin country. umap allows to leave some key/values on a marker (https://github.com/umap-project/umap/pull/1243) but when trialing it I was unsuccessful.

    What I think users could benefit from is geo coordinates mapped to umap out of a fully editable spreadsheet that contains anything you find useful during your research.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @wupatz i think there’s something in this. I’m gathering this data - more or less - anyway. The question is how I systematise it… I’ll think further on a long rail trip tomorrow.

    crypticinquiry,

    @jon Ssshhh!!
    Lots of us who prefer some solitude know this - keep it quiet or we'll be inundated with the lazy whining and complaining about why couldn't they have all the empty seats at the other end?, etc.🙄

    ouro,
    @ouro@social.snircle.space avatar

    @jon I recently had a highly irritating experience in which platform staff overcompensated for this dynamic by waving passengers up past some admittedly busy, but not full, carriages. The train got progressively busier until the final carriage was a standing room only crush.

    PGLux,

    @jon

    On your way outor back, you may try Chamonix - Pré St Didier or Aosta by coach...

    Mendrisio - Varese (MEVA) was a mini Leman Express ahead of Leman-Express (CEVA).

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @PGLux I went on that Chsmonix line ages ago, c 2006. Revisiting that is also a good idea. I’ll see what I can plan. More at the Austria-Hungary border might work too.

    PGLux,

    @jon

    2 days is perhaps a little short for 🇦🇹 🇭🇺 .

    Chamonix + Mendrisio can also be joined with Vallorbe - Le Brassus + La Cure + Nyon

    You actually can transport a bike on the Eurostar (and not disassembled) but you need to bring it before… unless they changed their policy since I did it last.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @rikefranke that was stopped at the start of COVID and not restarted AFAIK

    sellathechemist,
    @sellathechemist@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon @rikefranke Yes, as far as I know you now can only take a bike of any kind provided it's bagged and isn't longer than (I think) 90 cm in on dimension. Brompton good. Airnimal by the skin of its teeth.

    sellathechemist,
    @sellathechemist@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon @rikefranke I think it may be related to the design of the new trains which no longer have a loco on the front with room to stash freight. With powered bogies (not sure what they're called) you can get two more carriages worth of passengers on board, at the expense of bikes. Maybe they need roof carriers. 😝

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @sellathechemist @rikefranke Yes. Distributed traction. But now there’s EU law that any new train has to take bikes - so the next generation Eurostar will have to take them.

    sellathechemist,

    @jon @rikefranke Maybe they'll add a trailer.

    jon,

    sellathechemist,

    knud,
    @knud@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon

    I always though it was different: ICEs to Paris 1-2x hitting the bottom really hard, while TGVs don't. So just different standards for the trains, not tracks;-)

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @knud I don't like ICEs on that line either, but I don't remember it hitting the limit last time I was on it.

    knud,
    @knud@mastodon.social avatar

    Anyway, my last trips were all by TGV.

    jon,

    @jon, how was it regarding your bicycle? Any questions asked? I’m still a tiny bit concerned about my upcoming travel with my slightly bigger folding bicycle in October.

    @andrew_shadura Odd. It was too wide to be scanned. But it went through the machine folded but standing upright. Try that!

    @jon, thanks. I hope mine fits. Now I need to double-check the NightJet… 😄

    @andrew_shadura NightJet will be fine. No stress. The only issue there will be if it runs, and on time!

    @jon Depends on the train. I took the 18:04 to Rotterdam the other week. Joined check-in queue just before 17:00, got through all the controls just as they opened boarding for my train.

    @jon I love the beautiful, intricate but also simple, train stations designed this way.

    Now every train station must be something created by the likes of Calatrava, full of structural problems and soaring budgets

    The piano guy was there as called by to drop a bag off earlier.
    The city’s buzzing. I’m planning in whiling the afternoon away on a riverboat trip after lunch on the PoW Terrace 😉.

    @jon

    There is room for +1 platform (and +1 or 2 tracks).

    @jon also a good place for a pint/champagne, at the back by the hotel!

    @jon The Betjeman is laptop friendly, so I often spend the afternoon working there on my way home.

    @kentindell I reckon the best is about 45 min before departure. They’ll still let you through. But the lounge is heaving.

    @kentindell (I can get in the lounge with my DB frequent traveller card. It’s less crowded)
