I am sickly fascinated by how awful and weird mobile game ads have become. I'm part of a Facebook group where we share terrible ads and make up lore for the recurring characters. My phone is full of screenshots like this. Some actors from Eastern Europe, who appear in some of the ads, are also in the group.

A cartoon guy in a tuxedo tips his fedora while his speech bubble, which identifies him as a mafia boss, declares, "Long live LGBTQ!"
A woman with filthy, spiky hair, trash on her dirty body, is sprawled in a disgusting kitchen. Green cartoon stink wafts from her hair. A pink text box below her reads "Fall apar"

A new brings 's fresh special on what seems to be the most oppressive presidential election in . We look into what stories the state media can and cannot touch, check out Putin's body doubles, the systemic opposition, talk about Twix the cat ( look out for this bit) at the insistence of the boss lady. She too is still digesting y'day's news - we recorded all this before the announcement of Alexey โ€™s death

I like this letter in today's Guardian; it turns round what I would usually say about #vets; that they are an illustration of how expensive #healthcare is if its provisions is entirely privatised.

Rather Anne Cowper uses the experience of her #cat's treatment as a way of showing how great the #NHS could be if it was fully (and properly) funded.

Its a great rhetorical point, and although my warning still stands, she rightly puts the argument the other way (too)!

#NHScrisis
#SaveOurNHS

TheDonsieLass,
@TheDonsieLass@mas.to avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 I take her point about NHS funding but the two systems are not comparable.

Vets have a fraction of the (expensive) med tech of doctors.

If we euthanised ill/disabled people as nonchalantly as we do pets, it would save money but be a eugenicist nightmare. Pets who are 'too expensive' to treat are euthanised. A UK study found that over 20% of dogs euthanised were for 'old age'. No thanks.

But do let's fund the NHS. Just appreciate it costs way more & may never be so slick

TheDonsieLass,
@TheDonsieLass@mas.to avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 I agree, it does, and that includes illustrating how a privatised, fee-paying system would be terrible for humans (which you also suggested in your post).

But again, totally agree with adequate health funding (public health first for prevention to reduce/delay NHS need, of course).

As for simile quality, not one may be perfect but a poor one is unhelpful -- for example the deathless comparison of a national economy with a household budget!

I'm like "Hey, look at these fascinating things I learned/ read about, aren't they shiny? And cool? I think you are a cool person and you might enjoy these!"

If I do this to someone, it's a sign of trust that they won't make fun of me. (I'v been bullied for it as a kid).

Wonโ€™t work of course because most of us canโ€™t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail.
