kraft,

Alright junkies, I'm a Mastodon instance admin and I'm an engineering group lead at Automattic (think the company of WordPress' founder) who is leading the work to add Mastodon as a supported service for our Jetpack Social product.

That said, what's the sell to get me to spend more time here?

atomicpoet,

@kraft Interesting that you work at Automattic! In a previous post, I said this:

"The best way to explain is to imagine what would happen if (pre-Elon) fell in love with and they had a baby."

I wrote a long thread about why here:

https://mastodon.social/@atomicpoet/110330138893896925

That said, here's merely 5 reasons to love Calckey:

  1. Emoji reactions
  2. Quoted posts
  3. Comment trees
  4. Galleries
  5. Drive
  6. Channels

Having fun looking around here!

(Also tagging @kraft@religious.social) so you can read about this on Mastodon too.)

@atomicpoet This looks interesting. Especially in light of it being separated from Mastodon development as I understand it.

What's the development approach? Do the devs do UX research and do community engagement?

atomicpoet,

@christo is a fork of , which is actually two years older than Mastodon. It started off as @kainoa’s personal project but has become a team endeavour. There’s lots of community input and engagement.

@atomicpoet @kainoa Thanks for confirming that is a fork of . Where is the community discussion related to development? GitHub?

kainoa,
panos,

@kraft so, you're the one we need to convince in order for Wordpress to get a "Share on Fediverse" instead of "Share on Mastodon" button? 😇

kraft,

@panos heh, yeah. Mastodon, at least, had a common share intent URL (e.g. instance.tld/share?title=blah or whatever it was) so we went with Mastodon instead of generic. If all Fediverse had the same URL scheme for share intent, it would have been a no brainer for a generalized button!

panos,

@kraft @kainoa could we make this work somehow? And get @dansup from Pixelfed on board, and Akkoma and Misskey and whoever else makes software for this magic place?

kainoa,

@panos @kraft @dansup it already works on Calckey/Misskey! https://calckey.social/share?title=blah

panos,

@kainoa @kraft @dansup So, already a significant part of the fediverse (outside mastodon) supports this! On second thought, I'm not sure if a Share button for articles applies to Pixelfed, since it's a photo sharing platform. But if this is supported by a few more other major platforms, like Lemmy and Akkoma, then this would mean any "Mastodon share" button would practically work as a "Fediverse share" button! This is something we need to standardize. I wonder if @evan has any thoughts on this, if there is a way to achieve a standard on that front.
I found this project https://github.com/Uden-AI/fediverse-share but I think that it would be better if we could somehow have an official (or unofficial, but widely used) universal way of doing it, so that other sites could add Fedi share buttons easily.

My thought is that this is a great case for . /cc @paul

That said, I think the most practical option for Automattic would be to ask for your Mastodon API server, let you log in, and then save your key for future likes/shares/whatevs.

And to top off the discussion I'll add an obligatory reference to the Enhancement Proposal process, where any dev can take the initiative and bring a particular mechanism into standard use..

blake,

@evan @panos @kainoa @dansup @kraft @paul Web Intents seems like a great fit for federated interactions from different sites across the Fediverse. Such a shame it was scrapped.

    kraft,

@panos @kainoa @dansup @evan On our side, @jeremy kicked off a discussion about evolving our Share to Mastodon to be more generic:

    @kraft @kainoa @dansup @panos @jeremy great.

Probably the big overlooked item here is that ActivityPub does include a standard API, which would make this process pretty clean.

    indieterminacy,

@kraft @panos @smallcircles The Fediverse is a heterogeneous environment, with different communities, tools and ideas interoperating through common communications transfer norms and protocol technologies.

A generalist tool like Wordpress would be undermining its creative capacities and reach should it be confining itself to a subset of the Fediverse.

Given the acceptable barrier of entry here its within Automattic's capabilities and competences to overcome your stated inhibitors.

    :)

    Atexjam,

@kraft Calckey is just cool.It will give anyone who integrates it into their system a huge buy into the new internet; decentralized user-driven and easily customized to meet any niche or standard market .

    kainoa,

@kraft welcome! you might wanna take a look at the pages feature 👀

@kraft can you tell us more about what you mean by adding it as a supported service?

    kraft,

@liaizon it could be a few different things. What we've added/adding for Mastodon is a "Share to Mastodon" button ( see an example at https://kraft.blog/2023/02/joining-the-student-advisory-board/ ) and we're adding support for our auto-post function where when you publish a blog post, an excerpt, some media, and a link is published on your socials.

For Twitter, we also had things like tweetswarming where we'd suck in a thread and import it into a new post for those who did huge Twitter threads and realized it should be on their site. Also, had the reverse. Write a post and have it auto-posted as a Twitter thread with sensible breakpoints.

Those latter two were really because of the char count limits of Twitter which I don't think would apply to the Fediverse platforms I've checked out so far.

    matthieu_xyz,

@kraft @liaizon Have you considered, instead of sharing the blog post to mastodon, making the entire blog subscrible as part of the fediverse?

Like a "Follow" and a "reblog" buttons instead of a "share" button.

    kraft,

@matthieu_xyz @liaizon yes! That's in the works too. We brought on board the gentleman who created https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/ to bring ActivityPub support to WordPress sites.

He's working now on integrating it for all WordPress.com sites and making it a better experience.

Right now, it isn't feature-complete enough for me, personally, to say it's ready for folks who aren't early adopters and okay with rough edges.

The sharing and auto-posting is a bit easier to do since there is the existing model of doing it on legacy social media platforms.

On the Tumblr side of the company, same thing. Want to get it to be ActivityPub-compliant. I don't work over there but I imagine that's a pretty big effort and I don't know where it stands off hand.

Long answer but yes. Having a site published using the ActivityPub protocol is on the horizon.

    @liaizon@wake.st avatar

@kraft @matthieu_xyz thank you so much for these tidbits of insider knowledge! do you know any tumblr employees who are currently on the fediverse to follow for potential updates about that mission?

    kraft,

@liaizon @matthieu_xyz I don't offhand. I'm skipping work tomorrow but I'll ask around a bit on Monday when I log back into work.
