the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.
A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.
It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!
@mathowie Just one more example of how Apple’s software design focus has shifted from outstanding interaction design and overall usability to gratuitous gimmicks and a massive waste of precious processor cycles.
@mathowie having nonsense like that on by default is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to tell my work tool "don't be childish I'm having an important meeting".
@mathowie ah thats what it was. I had a video call with my doctor and said something like all is good and suddenly there was a big thumbs down emoji in the video and we both were confused. I wonder what triggered this, as I did not made any conscious gestures
@mathowie I hate this shit so much. Used to work for a place where the ticket system had a unicorn fly across the window on a rainbow when you closed a ticket.
@mathowie this happened a couple times to me too, although for me it was in a professional setting and not a therapeutic setting. Egregious. How did this get greenlit??
Scratch that, I know how it got greenlit. If it’s an AI powered feature, all sense goes out the window. Ship it no matter who it harms.
@mathowie oh, shit, that's what this has been? i've noticed lately in google meet these big floaty 👍 bubbles appearing when people wave their hands about it. honeslty the first time it happened it was in the corner of my eye and i thought it was a visual hallucination
@mathowie My wife is a therapist and does a lot of telehealth over iPad and she confirmed she’s had balloons and bubbles pop out of her head and had no idea what triggered it. 🎉

I was just in a Zoom call, complaining to a colleague about a proposed feature, & said, “Who wants this? Nobody wants this… even if it’s free.” And then Bono & Edge popped up behind me.
@mathowie@rawx i found this in my therapy session too. It was funny, but not the right time or place. I did a sarcastic thumbs up too. So it could have been bad things I was talking about.
@mathowie Apple never learn - reminds of when (pre-Intel) Macs first had system-wide voice recognition enabled by default and if you learned the correct intonation for the default voice you could reboot anyone else's Mac (without saving open docs) by loudly saying "Computer - Shutdown - Yes" and the hjinks that followed this discovery
@mathowie there was a phone brand years ago that auto inserted emojis into texts etc based off words used.
So if you messaged someone to tell them their dog had been killed by a car, the word car got replaced with a cutesy cartoon putt-putting along like Chitty Bang bang.
Kinda hoped that lesson had been learnt!
