A reminder that having no Speaker means the House of Representatives can't conduct any business, and a reminder that THAT'S WHAT THE REPUBLICAN EXTREMISTS WANT.
To them it's a feature, not a bug.

engineerminded,

@petergleick and what are they expecting to accomplish with this?

@petergleick I'm always fascinated by the people who ask "What is their end goal?"

This. This is their end goal. There is no "there" after "here".

VernAFish,
@VernAFish@mstdn.social avatar

@petergleick exactly. The media should cover this as their intentional semi-shut down of the government

GatekeepKen,
@GatekeepKen@mastodon.social avatar

@petergleick

Of the 10 Hopefuls that may run for the GQP, 8 are insurrectionist and voted to overturn the election.

failedLyndonLaRouchite,

@petergleick

is it actually true that the house can't conduct any business ?

surely, if say someone attacked the US, the house could act ?

or the rule(s) that require a speaker can be suspended temporarily ?

can we have an expert on house rules and procedures weigh in on this ?

MyLittleMetroid,
@MyLittleMetroid@sfba.social avatar

@petergleick there’s actually no reason why the temporary speaker can’t keep running things.

Other than “they don’t wanna” I guess.

dswidow,
@dswidow@newsie.social avatar

@petergleick

Absolutely seems that way!

The "Crazy Eight" and other House Republicans are so off their rockers that they want to destroy our government.

Unfortunately, we have to sit through the drama of this playing out to the point where a few reasonable Republicans see no other choice but to align with Democrats in some way.

This reminds me of grade school and it's just so embarrassing.🤦🏻‍♀️

@petergleick Taking Reagan's 1981 inaugural address to its logical conclusion: "Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem."

@petergleick I've been wondering if they'll keep it up past the government shutdown 🙄

Alephwyr,
@Alephwyr@chitter.xyz avatar

@petergleick They are aiming at a shutdown. If they had managed to cause one the first time they would have kicked McCarthy out anyway simply to burn the bridge behind them

Stoneycase,
@Stoneycase@heads.social avatar

@petergleick @chargrille Dysfunction is their primary function.

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

@petergleick

Yes, shutting down all federal legislation nationally during a Democratic Administration iswhat they want.

ThreeSigma,
@ThreeSigma@mastodon.online avatar

@petergleick Also, too, it would take only 5 republicans crossing the isle to let business get started... so really, they ALL want it.

stehgeiger,

@petergleick
But then why didn't the Dems back McCarthy

petergleick,
@petergleick@fediscience.org avatar

@stehgeiger Why should they, when McCarthy was also held hostage by the extremists and unable to pass any bipartisan legislation.

stehgeiger,

@petergleick
Thanks. So the House was blocked anyway

prefec2,
@prefec2@norden.social avatar

@stehgeiger @petergleick the story begins when the tea party split the conservatives and now both big parties cannot have a majority without either cooperating over part borders which is rare or co-operate with the fascists.

McCarthy did the latter and it ended bad.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@prefec2 @stehgeiger @petergleick bipartisanship with fascists is what voting Dem delivers, seems to be how that works

prefec2,
@prefec2@norden.social avatar

@RebelGeek99 @stehgeiger @petergleick the Reps could have reached out to Dems but they did not. As they aligned themselves with Fascists. They could have suggested a bipartisan speaker after the last election. However, they opted to sabotage Biden was more important then to deliver a working parliament.

ReallyBlue2,

@petergleick exactly. The Putin/Bannon playbook

prefec2,
@prefec2@norden.social avatar

@ReallyBlue2 @petergleick I am biased in that topic, but we had the same playbook in history. German fascist did the same thing creating a dysfunctional parliament and conservatives lend them a hand and thought they could control them.
So I a sense this gives me heavy deja vu vibes.

prefec2,
@prefec2@norden.social avatar

@petergleick exactly. Fascists want to sabotage democratic institutions. They did the same in Germany in the past. The goal is to show that democracy does not work and that a strong man is needed to fix it. They already ruined the supreme court and now it's the house of representatives. Unfortunately, there is no constructive vote for no confidence. This would have prevented that republicans could remove the speaker without voting a new one into office.

StephanB,
@StephanB@ruhr.social avatar

@prefec2 @petergleick I suggest that - for the sake of the nation and US democracy - few moderate Republicans should vote with Democrats to find a new Speaker.
