famously bragged about being the one to undo Roe v. Wade as pres, insinuating others had tried & failed. continues to be a, if not the, defining issue for 2024 election. Dems have gotten a boost every time it was on the ballot since Dobbs was handed down.

So no surprise Trump walked it back in his statement this am, saying, leave abortion up to states, knowing that conserv stance on abortion cd cost him votes. It's not about policy or principle w Trump.

@GottaLaff I figured years ago that Trump just blurts out whatever he thinks will make him look good and strong to his current audience and any sort of consistency beyond that is for losers.

    I keep brooding on the way the xz backdoor was enabled in significant part via weaponizing the FOSS culture of shitty behavior and abuse.

    Yes, there're other pathologies at work here (the big tech capitalist pillaging of the commons, etc).

    But what is striking is that the uncool, mean standards of FOSS conduct that many of us have decried for years, & that many defended as authentic, tough, etc., ended up not just being exclusionary loser behavior, but a significant attack surface.

    frens, I'm researching how to find out the proper Bundle in 2024 and if anything changed but the best I have in my notes is this:

    @ctietze that’s about it still. And you can’t really declare it once because Bundle.module is a different one in every module.

    I appreciate and respect how many people in the EU have told us Americans how we don’t understand how EU policy works wrt the DMA. And you’re right! When we opine on it, it is rarely with a cultural understanding of how things work there. But similarly, I really would like EU people to understand the US DoJ doesn’t work like the EU. And the cases might have some similarities but are fundamentally completely different in scope, procedure and enforcement.

    While there are only 80,000 of those iconic giant redwoods left in their native California (I blame all those rubbish speedbike riders in Return of the Jedi), there are 500,000 now growing in the UK.

    Smaller so far, given that they’re much younger, but apparently the warm wet weather conditions suit them well & the largest are already over 50 metres tall.

    @markmccaughrean I honestly don’t know where that 80k number comes from. Maybe at the nadir of the logging era? Or are they mixing up redwoods and sequoias? (The latter only grow in the Sierra and are a lot more threatened but it’s not the ones that are thriving on the UK).

    I have probably walked past more than 80k redwoods myself. A lot of their logged range just sprouted again once left alone and is thriving. They survive fires better than anything else in the forest and grow in an area that isn’t very affected by climate change so far since the nearby ocean keeps things more stable than elsewhere.

    It’s pretty cool that there’s a bunch of them in the UK though. I wonder if they’d grow well in Galicia and northern Portugal.

    I can't understate how magical @swift concurrency feels when it works! Sure, it took me 3 hours to land on this result, but I came out of it with a much better understanding of parameter packs and task cancellation management in the process 🎉
