Welcome to Autumn 2023 Day 26, 26 Oct, Santiago de Compostela - Vigo-Urzaiz - Valença - Coimbra

Today I’m crossing these borders
Valenca do Minho 🇵🇹 - Tui 🇪🇸

🥵 Got to

But damn cycling in Santiago on a rainy October morning is no fun

I hope the rain clears a bit before I have to go to Valença 🇵🇹 (cycling from Tui 🇪🇸) later!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

No arguments with police this morning. Better than yesterday. I found a bike stand over on the other side of the car park 🎉

sorenhave,
@sorenhave@mastodon.nu avatar

@jon Also small victories matter! 💪🏻👏🏻

smveerman,
@smveerman@zug.network avatar

@jon I looked up the transportation information on the event website, and it turns out the bus from the city to the congress centre only runs every 70 minutes. Who comes up with such a schedule 😳

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@smveerman there were special buses for the event. But that’s not actually a solution! There’s also an office complex here - they could use a bus!

PGLux,

@jon @smveerman

That's a big problem in 🇪🇸 : some cities grew up like mushrooms, with loads of new attractions and facilities built in the outskirts, yet not always with adequate public transportation.

Sometimes even dangerous for a 🚴 🚶 , as such areas are usually cut up with motorways with no genuine or too few under/overpasses.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

María Jesús Montero saying the EU needs to get back to the needs of its citizens

How about - errr - at Spain’s borders? 🤔

(At least she’s a motivating speaker)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

There’s this continuous and fluid relationship between Galicia and northern Portugal says Alfonso Rueda Valenzuela

So fluid you have two trains a day 🤷‍♂️

PGLux,

@jon

  • CP replaced 3kV-inverters with 25V (only) inverters when buying S-2000 cars "Arco" carriages from Renfe to use them on Valença - Oporto.

3+25kV inverters could have been a game changer.

My speech yesterday at is now on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvSAi4mBYYo

The camera position was a pain, but it is the sound you want. And it starts with a bit of a rant...

eigengott,
@eigengott@mstdn.social avatar

@jon Thanks for that rant! It's not only the bad trains, but that Europe's elite institutionalized traveling by plane as the default (high carbon lifestyle, as Kevin Anderson puts it). Your frustrating conversation with the organizing agency is a good example of that. This must change.

statsguy,
@statsguy@mas.to avatar

@jon Nice rant!

Thank you for raising these issues. Let's hope people are listening.

remi,

@jon great talk! A good primer to all you've done over the years, I'll gladly point people to it should the opportunity pop up.

Wrapping up here at

The people here - from the European Commission and national and regional authorities - are the people who can solve problems on the ground

The problem is the sour political context in which many of them have to work…

jon,

This is indeed pretty funny. Or tragic. Or a stupid waste of money. Or all of those.

Come out of the “wrong” door at Santiago de Compostela and you skip the bag scan on the platform.

No one stops you.

Security theatre, eh?

A massive car park

Can you spot the bike parking?

sarajw,

@jon How fast do they go? I don't fancy the extra drag and possible further damage caused by a bunch of strong wind getting in there

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@sarajw 250km/h!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@jon Ooof. Surely that'll just keep tearing itself apart 😬

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

I see you’re all struggling with the where are the bike racks question

Here’s a slightly more zoomed in version. You can see the racks on this one

djasa,
@djasa@cztwitter.cz avatar

@jon there's no bike parking unless there are racks right in front of the building or inside the building. 🙂

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@djasa well the car parking was so damned massive I legitimately couldn’t find the bike racks!

@jsl it is real I can assure you. I shot it with my drone.

josgeluk,
@josgeluk@mastodon.nl avatar

@jon Is it the building on the far left in the back of the parking?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@josgeluk I wish! But no

josgeluk,
@josgeluk@mastodon.nl avatar

@jon Is it this thingie?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@josgeluk I think that’s the bus stop

PGLux,

@jon @josgeluk

Maybe underneath one of the 2 ramps that stretch from the parking to the building roof?

bix,
@bix@chaos.social avatar

@jon that’s a really familiar car park. I think we were spat out into it while our Camino bike ride ended somewhere around there.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@bix Could be. It’s on the hill sort of opposite the city.

cweickhmann,
@cweickhmann@qoto.org avatar

@jon Trick question: It's obviously in the - potentially equally massive - underground parking garage ;-)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@cweickhmann there is an underground car park (really, there is) but it’s not there

@jon@gruene.social avatar

Renfe priorities…

PGLux,

@jon

From all the tales which I got, ambience was more relaxed on board of RENFE in the 1960s, notwithstanding who was residing at El Pardo.

And in the early-80s, Renfe was boasting its "Cordialidad". Another world:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDgrtah8Z7k

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Autumn 2023 Train 107
MD 9143
14:28 Santiago De Compostela - Vigo-Urzaiz 15:30
Renfe

Distance: 94km
Average speed: 91km/h

Train type: CAF Series 121 EMU, 4 carriages
⚡️
🚲: ⛔️ (can’t see any bike spots)
🦽: ✅ (ramp on board)
🛜: ⛔️
🍽️: ⛔️
🧳: 🤔 (narrow door areas, not handy with bags)
🧽: 😡 (windows not cleaned recently)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

And a Renfe Series 121 with compulsory reservation makes no sense on this service at all

At least 1/3 of passengers change at each stop. But there’s only one narrow-ish door per carriage

Passengers then search for assigned seats, blocking aisles. Which slows it down even more

But sure, it runs on a shiny semi-high speed line! 🎉

PGLux,

@jon

Well, S-121 is actually a mainline-designed EMU, derived from S-120.

Pity that vestibule remains as small as on S-120s, with no double doors as on S-594-98-99s.

Seat assignment is perhaps a tad too much on such line. If standees are unwanted, then just sell no more tickets than available seats.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

I think this Santiago de Compostela - Vigo Urzaiz service and line manage to combine the worst of high speed rail and the worst of regular rail

It’s quite an achievement

The line has been built at massive expense, but it’s only 200km/h, so not very fast

The stations are mostly concrete-y halts outside of towns

Lots of people get on and off every stop, but the train is compulsory reservation and designed for much longer trips

The loops onto the old line aren’t wired, so some trains diesel

PGLux,

@jon

The by-pass Vilagarcia de A - Padron was built to 250 km/h AFAIK...

Perhaps a KISS EMU of the same kind as those of Westbahn would be a better option than S-121.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PGLux or even a 160km/h regional EMU with shorter dwell times?

PGLux,

@jon

Maybe, but S-449s are as bad as S-121s as regards accessibility...

I am quite curious at those forthcoming 200 km/h EMUs ordered from CAF.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Pretty grandiose bridge and lift they’re building to better connect Vigo-Urzaiz shopping centre to the city

Autumn 2023 Bus 10
XG883
16:30 Vigo E.I. - Guillarei (Casa Oficios) 17:27

Distance: 27km
Average speed: 28km/h

Bus type: MAN Lion’s Intercity
⛽️
🚲: ⛔️ (hold is also quite small)
🦽: ✅
🛜: ⛔️
🍽️: ⛔️
🧳: 🙂 (hold large enough for bags)
🧽: 🙂

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Within 4 mins of leaving Vigo bus station we’ve scraped a tree, almost hit a learner driver (we now know the brakes work) and almost hit a plant pot (driver turned erratically to avoid)

I bet some awful stuff happens in train cabs too, but as a passenger you seldom experience it! ☺️

@jon The Vigo bus is coming and everybody’s jumping …

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Mastery (or not) of driving fascinates me

This bus driver drives like a maniac. But does he think he’s a good driver? Does he think “ah but when I was young I was worse!”

Or does his perception of his skill diverge year on year, more and more, from the passengers’ perceptions?

    @atbeaune @jon The job is mostly getting around the circle without hitting anything. If the timing on the route is off or the traffic is bad, the next loop is late, and there's not a good way to catch up. There is an anttena above most buses that gets hit a lot, and I've had overgrown branches smack the bus because there's no space to pull over. I'm not questioning that this driver hit a tree, of course, that happens.

    For good driving in a bus, the tires won't hit or jump curbs. Stops and starts will feel smooth. Clean windshield. There won't be hesitation on tight turns, and they tell if a gap is wide enough for a bus just by looking at it. + No speeding, no accidents, no drinking.

    I drove in the midwest US, which is different, but people made room once I put on my signal. One route had to get across multiple lanes quickly, and people would make space before I put on my signal, because it was often the same drivers, and they were used to the bus changing lanes right there.

    ambrosen,
    @ambrosen@hulvr.com avatar

    @atbeaune @jon That's an appalling definition of good driving.

    I like Arco cars quote much, but it's a pity that the Bar area has gone.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @PGLux yes that’s now a huge multi use area. At least a vending machine or coffee machine there would be good. But the cars are quiet, the seats good, the ride smooth, the vestibules well designed.

    PGLux,

    @jon

    The 2nd-class seats of Arco stock are perhaps the best 2nd-class ones in Europe.
    Well-padded, well-profiled and very good recline.

    They can also be enjoyed on KTX-1 🇰🇷

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @PGLux and ingenious table design in the seat backs. It’s really clever.

    PGLux,

    @jon

    Yes, it's handy.

    The design of the Arco refurbishment dates back to 1997.

    I still can't understand why the Corail Téoz refurbishment designed in 1999-2000 was so mediocre, albeit quite expensive.

    Feeling a bit melancholy tonight as my train rolls towards Coimbra…

    In three days I’m home in Berlin. done for this year.

    What comes next?

    stadtstreunen_at,
    @stadtstreunen_at@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon Schengen borders of course!

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @stadtstreunen_at external ones? Yes I could try that. Or the Balkans.

    PGLux,

    And more 🇨🇭 borders: Le Brassus, La Cure, Divonne, Jougne, Leymen, Mendrisio...

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @PGLux @stadtstreunen_at well there are of course some borders I’m missing. And I’ve sort of covered Switzerland already (and Norway). But the number of really interesting borders to still visit in the EU is now quite few. Cesky Tesin, Breil-Cuneo and Breil-Ventimiglia, Reutte Tyrol and Mittenwald are about the only ones I’m itching to visit.

    PGLux,

    @jon @stadtstreunen_at

    Maybe some selective , where there is no train...

    jon,

    PGLux,

    @stadtstreunen_at @Island_Martha i remember checking if i could do half by bus, half - inc. the cross border section - by bike. And abandoning because I could not work out an adequate cycle route. But I will have another look.

    A kind of pre-rail-Baltica trip could be interesting I think!

    Island_Martha,

    There is a lot of cycling here in Estonia. Saaremaa has an entire network of cycle paths, although no border crossings. @vandyke4ad neither train route into Portugal works very well. But if you have enough time it’s just about doable!

    @jon NS used to have 6 A32 trams. They also had the same announcement sounds as Stockholm, but it was probably because The Hague’s HTM had the possibility to buy some trams via SL’s order.

    PGLux,

    @smveerman @jon

    Also on the KLIA Express 🇲🇾

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @PGLux @smveerman was it originally a Bombardier jingle? Although it is now very generalised in Porto (I am in an ex-Arco carriage that has it)

    PGLux, (edited )

    @jon @smveerman

    KLIA Express runs with Siemens Desiro....well, a derivative of ET-425.

    @jon At least they didn't print the EU flag upside down ...

    Vikki_Carter,

    @jon with accidents and SPADs investigated I would say that train drivers take driving very seriously. If all road accidents were reviewed and findings implemented in the same way as rail the roads would be a lot safer!

    AGTMADCAT,

    @jon Man, that's a weird looking train!

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @notsoloud a walkway. I think.

    @jon To be honest, I’m sure it’s cool architecture and all, but it also looks like it’s using that camouflage they used in WWII to hide ships and these days to make it hard to photograph cars still in the design phases. It’s hard to see anything there 😵‍💫

    @jon which one? The invisible or the non existent one?
    Or don’t you tell me the illegal one ☝️👀

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @ummels underground parking, perhaps. But I didn’t go there!

    @jon When I went from Ferrol to Madrid I noticed both the lack of scanning and the lack of ticket checks before being allowed onto the platform. Just like most of Europe.

    Wonderful rant - at the heart of the issue(s ) that must be addressed if any kind of sustainable transportation can be created.

    @rivoluzioneurbanamobilita It’s at the far opposite end of a car park for 500 cars. I found it by chance when leaving the centre yesterday. There’s not a single sign indicating where it is.
