So, the hubs and I have a one of the long term couple debates about when is the best time to shower.

For me, a shower is calming and relaxing, so I tend to do it in the evening or before bed.

He says it's refreshing and energizing, so it helps him wake up, and get going in the morning.

How about y'all, is it relaxing, refreshing, something in between, or something different entirely? When do you normally do it? Have you always done it the same or have you changed over the years?

@dancer_storm@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@RickiTarr it's both. Showers fix everything!

Can't sleep? Shower relaxes you.
Didn't sleep enough? Shower wakes you up.
Feeling cold? Hot shower.
Feeling hot? Cold shower.
Have a cold? Shower steam helps liquefy the mucus and helps with throat dryness.
Hangover? You know it.
Missing your ex? Don't call them, take a shower.

☝️ This guy showers.

And I agree with him.

I only take 5-6 showers a year, so have no great advice here.

I'm a total bath person, the hotter, the better. Foaming baths, candles, scrubs, bottles of magical smelling elixirs on every shelf. 😃 It's my thing, a panacea (since childhood) for whatever's ailing my heart, mind or body.

A comfort to shut down the world for a while, any time of day or night, and plus, get clean. 😉

notroot,

@RickiTarr Definitely changed over the years.

Usually depending on whether or not I have a nice bathtub! Now I have a huge modern claw-foot tub, and lately I like morning baths, with a book. Hot as I can stand, and lots of drinking water.

It relaxes me for the day ahead, and starts the day doing something I enjoy. I work from home, so the work/life balance is crucial

@RickiTarr Normally in the evening. But when I have engaged in strenuous evening post-shower exercise (ahem), I shower in the morning, too.

wendinoakland,
@wendinoakland@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Been mulling this over… I always shower in the morning - I think it’s habitual for me? Husband goes for bike rides, so he showers later, sometimes even in the evening. It’s 100% not a thing.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@wendinoakland Yeah it's actually pretty convenient that way lol

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@RickiTarr Depends on whether you run the water hot or cold eh? 😀

@RickiTarr if i shower in the morning there’s a real risk i fall asleep again

CppGuy,

@RickiTarr
Showering in the morning is part of my getting-up, waking-up routine. It energises me.

I won't go out without a respirator. I can't wear a respirator without shaving, because my stubble drags it off my face. I can't shave a greasy face. So I always shower before going out.

Conversely, if I'm going to do a dirty job like turning the compost, the shower waits until I've finished.

@RickiTarr Morning/afternoon. I hate trying to sleep when I feel damp. 😂

biinfc,
@biinfc@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Refreshing and energizing for me. I don’t feel like I can face the day without a shower first. It’s always been that way.

pikesley,
@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@RickiTarr Weekdays, shower before work. Weekends (or days off or whatever), I usually take a long hot bath in the afternoon

jcrabapple,

@RickiTarr I'm an afternoon shower person. I work from home so I get one right after work, before dinner.

@RickiTarr Mine has changed. For decades (like, from puberty to age 40) I was a morning shower guy.

Having 3 kids changed that. There was too much to do in the morning (breakfast, making lunches, getting myself to work). I started showering at the office (my company had gyms, and I'd take a quick shower upon arrival or between meetings).

Now I shower at night. It's relaxing, & I really like going to bed nice and clean (and my wife certainly likes my face best right after it's been shaved).

@RickiTarr

Prior to getting MS I’d shower in the morning because it helped me wake up, now showering sucks, if I’m not very careful to keep the temperature just right I end up with nerve pain and TGN (too cold) or nerve pain, fatigue, vision problems (too hot).

I shower less often- if I’m going out it’s the day before, not the day of, so I have a night to recover.

rothko,
@rothko@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr i tend to avoid evenings, because if i go to bed with damp hair, it dries all stupid and freaky and then i basically have to wash and dry it again to make it less stupid. and i hate spending time on my hair.

ShiitakeToast,
@ShiitakeToast@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I'm a late riser, so I usually don't have time for a shower in the morning. I wash my face and put on a fresh coat of deodorant. I like taking a shower a few hours before bed because I want to be fully dry before I get under the covers.

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

@RickiTarr I've always taken a shower before work, early each morning. Retired, I skip that, I'm going out in my grubby clothes to dig gardens or work on cars. I won't shower before that. But, I always have a shower before bed. That does relax me and make it easier to sleep, and it's still refreshing but not the kind that wakes you..

Dragon,

@Rasta @RickiTarr

Morning. I start coffee brewer, and I'm into the shower. Out of shower, dry, coffee, and go!

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

@Dragon If I have to go somewhere, a doctor's appt or something, I will be in the shower. But I drink my coffee about 4am. I don't shower that early, I'd only been out of the shower 5 hours at this point. ;P
@RickiTarr

Dragon,

@Rasta @RickiTarr

That's my work day thing, shower and go. Weekends I sometimes shower after yardwork/car stuff/whatever dirty chores.

Never in the evening though. 🤷‍♂️

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

@Dragon That's the same for me, any day. I'm puttering around inside or out, But even if I stayed in Jammies all day, I still get my night shower.

When I first rebuilt my bathroom in the country, it was dirty work, the floor was rebuilt, tub replaced, shower surround, I was working alone, 2 days non-stop, until I was able to take a shower, and then I went to bed. LOL

Likewise,
@Likewise@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I agree with you both, however I take one in the morning. That being said, I cannot stand getting into my bed at night without washing my feet and face.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr For me, it isn't so much how the shower makes me feel as liking to feel clean. I usually take three short showers a day. One in the morning, one after a midday workout, one before bed.

If I HAD to choose between morning and night, I'd choose night because I hate to slide under sheets if it feels like the film of the day is on me.

pete,

@RickiTarr

I take a shower when I know I'm going to be in a social situation with relative strangers, in a small location, e.g. optician, hairdresser, getting a blood test, volunteering, and I'll leave it until the last moment, usually arriving with my hair still damp. Needless to say, working from home and having no friends, this isn't often.

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RickiTarr I view a shower as a routine part of "not descending into feral madness" and as such keep to a once a day "whenever it fits in" routine. XD

olena,
@olena@genomic.social avatar

@RickiTarr also, in cold season I usually enjoy kinda cooler temperatures in the room, but my hands and feet are always cold, so I love to heat me up in a hot shower before going to bed: take a really hot shower or bath until everything stops being and feeling cold and take on fluffy socks and soft pj and quickly dive under the duvet guarantees falling asleep almost immediately and feeling really good)

olena,
@olena@genomic.social avatar

@RickiTarr I can’t go to sleep without taking one: going to bed without washing first or putting on a pj not on a freshly washed body grosses me out. If I sweat a lot and have extra time in the morning - I’d gladly take a shower in the morning also before changing from pj to work clothes. But I have long hair, and wash it daily or once in two days, so I usually don’t have enough time to let it dry in the morning (sleeping with wet hair is ok for me)

jamieannmason,
@jamieannmason@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

I shower twice a day. Morning times, just to wake up and rejuvenate, in the evenings, to wash off the chaos and ridiculousness of society and all of its faults, so I can get into my comfy bed and rest easy..
