@RickiTarr gaming culture as a whole has so many issues like this.
I’m a competitive gamer and I talk in Discord groups with lots of young males. They show signs of misogyny/bigotry all the time.
I always call them out which inevitably leads to conversations no one ever has with them. Some rebel and try to tear me down. But many respond well. One reported back after having read a couple of books I recommended on ethics.
@RickiTarr my regular daily gaming buddy is a woman. We play with my son. He sees and I see the strange things she experiences. My son and I are trying to change that.
@tkrex@RickiTarr oh, you’re absolutely right. I don’t live in those spaces, though. And it’s not everyone. Just mini groups within bigger servers. Because we’re in proximity, I don’t let that opportunity pass by. And I don’t game with these kids, we just happen to be in the same communities.
@franktaber@RickiTarr I’m just honest and forthright. Honestly, I never really know what to say. I just open my mouth and things come out. Context is important. Knowing where someone is in their journey. Everyone has a different lens. I think many folks avoid talking honestly about these things. It’s uncomfortable. But just talking is enough to yield progress. Almost every time.
@RickiTarr I can only think of Samus Aran, but nobody knew she was a woman until the end. Glad to see you pointing the spotlight at video games, nothing to see in comic books like this.
I wish I could remember the video I saw ages ago were this was being discussed by (IIRC) some game dev. They were taking the whole thing very seriously.
Watching the animations, I'm fairly sure they had never seen a boob in real life.
