It doesn't matter if some, many or even most, misguidedly flagged privacy concerns.
What matters is who Meta are, not what they do when they are allowed in.
They should not be a part of something that was created as a response to their abusive, sociopathic and damaging business model. That admins think the folks who came here should "wait and see", is ridiculous IMO.
So I'm looking for instances that will block Meta right away.
@fosstodon I appreciate the measured and sensible approach by Fosstodon. Not the biggest fan of Facebook myself, but not gonna prejudge anything they may come out with, especially if it ends up being based on the same foundations of ActivityPub.
@fosstodon Have you reached a consensus by now? I've seen the email re. the meeting offer and it looks like #fosstodon is leaning towards non-federation with #threads
@fosstodon big oof and big red flag on Meat's part for wanting an off the records conversation with ANY Mastodon admin or maintainer, most likely because they'll talk about their patented monetization model that they plan to use.
@fosstodon I think Meta will try to eat the fediverse from the inside, like a cancer.
But I also trust that the admins' only agenda here is to run a safe, interesting and sustainable instance.
So I'm concerned (insert a Marge Simpson grumble here!), and I would have taken a harder stance, but I guess I understand the unwillingness to ban something that doesn't exist yet. :)
Don't worry, the abuse survivors bandwagon has got you covered!
Here's a bit of bibliography on the topic:
Berger, Peter and Luckmann, Thomas: “The Social Construction of Reality”, 1966
Debord, Guy: “The Society of the Spectacle”, 1970
Foucault, Michel: “Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison”, 1977
Goffman, Erving: “Asylums: Essays on the Social Condition of Mental Patients and Other Inmates”, 1961
There are more arguments related to the history of Facebook, their infamous “buy, copy, or kill” strategy, the fact that they can wait for years before starting to degrade an ecosystem, or that they're larger than mastodon.social by the same order of magnitude than between mastodon.social and a single-user instance, so please, when a trans woman tells you to run, run. ❤️
@fosstodon When you say you will wait to 'weigh the advantages/disadvantages', what possible 'advantages' could there ever be to federating with a service run by a known fascist megacorp?
@toni you asked what possible advantages there could be. objectively speaking, if meta chose to, it could theoretically open up a means of seeing friends updates who are currently only on meta social platforms @fosstodon
@0xDEADBEEF@fosstodon@simon Don't worry, I won't. Just trying to understand the reasoning of allowing a corporation that has enabled genocide a free pass.
@toni@fosstodon@0xDEADBEEF thats a definite "con". but you asked what possible advantages there could be. i am being objective and finding potential advantages in answer to your question. it doesn't diminish the negatives, or the weight of them., but they also don't just disappear either.
@simon@fosstodon@0xDEADBEEF Okay so your answer was flippant. I meant 'advantages that outweight the already known disadvantages', not some minor convenience thrown to us as scraps.
