Due to the ongoing Xbox court case in the US, Microsoft has had to disclose that it is rebuilding home Windows OS to be a cloud streaming subscription service https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/27/23775117/microsoft-windows-11-cloud-consumer-strategy

"More recently we’ve heard Microsoft could be working on its own , too."

Another reason to move to if you can do without .

I don't like it, if what the article is saying means they're planning on replacing the local version for a streaming version completely. Then Microsoft is going to kill all their gaming ambitions in one go, they really need to rein in the windows team to make sure they always have a local version. Which is what I remember being what they were planning, local version for people who don't want it, streaming version for whoever the heck does.

DanMorgan,

@GossiTheDog @briankrebs I have used Windows 365 VM for a while now because the application I need won’t run under Parallels and Windows for ARM. I’m running an M1 MacBook Pro.

It works, but not for those with substandard broadband connections. I don’t know what a minimum would be but this solution isn’t for people with under 200 mBit.

Also moving files from the local to that VM isn’t is nice as Parallels. Microsoft has work to do.

rycuda,

@GossiTheDog And then comes the SaaS rent.

ablackcatstail,

@GossiTheDog Gee what could possibly go wrong here? 🙄

Niiju,

The only thing keeping me from Linux is that it's SOOOO ugly and full of bad UX.

Does anyone know, whether there will be a difference between Home and the PRO version regarding this "thin-client" / "cloudification" concept?

OMG
Microsoft's seems to be transforming the erstwhile "Windows everywhere" strategy into a "pervasive AI strategy.

    There should be 3.

However, I was experiencing massive upload issues during the past week, experiencing crashes.
Will take a look, if I still see it somewhere.

Guess I need to try harder to get used to Linux. Mint isn't doing it for me.

That'll be the end of me using Excel. Which will be immensely tiresome, as I'll have to rewrite all my programs.

@GossiTheDog Let's be honest: The vast majority doesn't care. A Microsoft account is already mandatory these days.

I just wonder how this will go performance wise. Will the whole computer run in the cloud or just the UI of the OS?

    Zen,

@GossiTheDog I've been saying and I can't believe it's actually true: 2023 is the year of Linux on the desktop.

@GossiTheDog @gmate8 Situations like this are quite in favor of opensource software and Linux as a whole. The subscription model is mainly there for the profit of the companies that released the software. And if I look at the price of the current Windows 365, the annual amount is similar to a pretty good PC. I myself am curious how the prices for Home customers will look like...

    taral,

@GossiTheDog I hate that I looked at this and said "probably true, even if it should be an Onion headline."

    KingPoogie,

@GossiTheDog I'm so tired of subscriptions and software as a service....
