"I think the defining economic reality of the modern platform media world is that all the platforms realized that an infinite supply of teenage creators are cheaper to deal with than media companies or groups of media individuals or powerful creators."
"#OpenAI’s voice cloning AI model only needs a 15-second sample to work
/
Called Voice Generation, the model has been in development since late 2022 and powers the Read Aloud feature in #ChatGPT."
"# The AI-generated voice can read out text prompts on command in the same language as the speaker or in a number of other languages.👈"
"OpenAI told the publication the model will only be available to about 10 developers."
#Journalism / Mona Chalabi on storytelling, the power of data, and covering Palestine
Mona Chalabi is a data journalist known for creating insightful visualizations and infographics, often focused on highlighting social issues and marginalization. She recently won a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting. Much of her recent work has been devoted to spreading awareness about the situation in Palestine through data visualizations, using imagery and statistics about casualties, violence, and human impact. Chalabi says she has experienced some loss in followers and visibility for her #Palestine posts, which she attributes to the controversial/sensitive nature of the topic and deeply entrenched biases about Palestinian narratives.
Seven years ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company was working on a driverless car. Yesterday, the tech giant announced that it was mothballing the project. @verge has more on Apple’s decision to kill its secretive car and the harsh realities the industry faces as a whole. https://flip.it/AJ_pRu #Tech#Cars#AI#Apple#TheVerge
Floppy disks are the "perfect reminders of how violently smashing bytes together on a thin, vulnerable plastic/magnet sandwich is still one of the most punk things you can do as a musician and artist.” @verge takes us inside the underground floppy disk music scene. https://flip.it/prIaig #Tech#Music#Technology#FloppyDisk#TheVerge
Apple fans are starting to return their Vision Pros
I don't think I've ever seen a piece of tech that obscures the eyes do well (3D Glasses, VR, AR). It's just one of those main sensory functions that cannot be obscured and is so vital for human function.

Nvidia market cap threatens Alphabet after overtaking Amazon
Nvidia's shares are $1.78 trillion, eclipsing Amazon's $1.75 trillion value
Nvidia was on #theverge of overtaking #alphabet as the dominant artificial intelligence chipmaker ended the day with a market capitalization above Amazon's for the first time in two decades
AI is the buzzword of the moment, and nowhere seems to be safe — even film festivals. This year’s edition of Sundance was a prime example. Multiple documentaries about the past and present of artificial intelligence made an appearance, and at least one film — the dark comedy Little Death — utilized generative AI as an...
Bedside lights, e-readers, even headlamps. Whatever it takes to keep reading into the night, right? Make room for the neck lamp, “the ultra-dorky gadget for reading physical books in dim light.” Here’s more from @verge. https://flip.it/oidmch #Tech#TheVerge#Bookstodon#Reading
The cynical takeaway from this morning's Apple Vision Pro reviews is: all the technology and money in the world can’t make VR headsets good. And I think that's the kind of thing that feels like it goes deeper than Apple's offering, and may just reverberate around the industry. A lot of time and effort has been put into these things for the past decade in the hope that someday it might be worth it; perhaps now that's more of an open question than a sure bet
@stroughtonsmith After watching several reviews, my conclusion, this is not a iPod, iPhone, iPad or Mac moment. Even the Apple Watch had some eureka at its launch although it took a little longer. But Nilay from #theverge gave the most responsible impression that this thing still can beat reality and has too many trade offs. I will give it time though, I usually don't get in until v3 or 4.
Netflix launched a cheaper, ad-supported tier in 2022, despite having vowed to remain ad-free. The plan is now one of the streaming service’s most popular tiers. @verge has more on Netflix’s efforts to become “a revenue-driving machine that outlasts all other streamers.” https://flip.it/fmYCNd #Tech#Netflix#Streaming#TheVerge
No, Gen Z, you’re not aging like milk, says Elizabeth Lopatto at The Verge. Lopatto advises to take a deep breath and realize what she already knows: Aging is great. Here’s more on the “quarter-life crisis” many are apparently experiencing. https://flip.it/H30s3z #Culture#GenZ#TheVerge

Motorcycle safety is improving and it may be making another upgrade with Verge Motorcycles’ most advanced safety system on two wheels when the TS Ultra launches later this year. @verge (no relation) has more on the futuristic, hub-less bike that looks like nothing else on the road. https://flip.it/TgTS45 #Tech#Technology#Motorcycle#TheVerge
2023 was a good year for gaming, but not so great for game employment. An estimated 9,000 jobs were lost in a turbulent year for the industry. Are dark times ahead? “A year that is terrible for game developers cannot be great for games,” Ash Parrish writes for The Verge. https://flip.it/8aO2BC #Tech#Gaming#VideoGames#TheVerge
