@ai6yr I think it is a bit more subtle than this. If you don't "have" to work you can just sit on the couch and watch TV. But for most people that doesn't feel "productive." I advise people who are "failing" at retirement to do volunteer work. A lot of non-profits can give you things to do which are both productive and rewarding in ways other than a paycheck.
@ChuckMcManis This is certainly the case for the normal retired folks AND the ultra wealthy people I know. There's a LOT of other things you can do with you time besides punching the clock which can engage you, and (hopefully) benefit society as a whole.
@ai6yr Exactly. I know a lot of people who, through stock options usually, reached the level that their investments grew at a rate where they could pay themselves the equivalent of their old 'take home' pay after taxes. My favorite is a guy who bought a tug boat and drives around the Sound in WA rescuing rich people who have gotten into trouble with their yachts. 😃
@ChuckMcManis@ai6yr Depending on whose yacht we're talking about, they might be able to do an even bigger public service by towing them out to sea and leaving them there.
@ai6yr I still think for a lot of these rich people they are like hoarders. But instead of bottle caps, baseball cards, those dumb plates or madame alexander dolls they go for dollar signs.
@grumble209@ai6yr Lots of those folk inherited the money. They could do a lot of charity work, since they don't need a wage to live well. But most weren't taught empathy, they were taught they were above the masses.
