Honestly, I am just tired of superhero movies. What, it has been 10 years of them? People want something different.

That's why I have retreated to spaces. I also watch Western dramas, but usually one thay doesn't run for seasons. I am also SUPER TIRED of tv shows getting cancelled before there is a proper ending!!

Abyss,

@liztai
I found the same feeling invade my love for Star Wars, to a lesser extent. They only keep making them because people keep watching them. I have started watching some of the classic horror from the 80's and Bollywood.

@Abyss Don't shows from the 80s and 90s feel refreshing? I'm the same. Dove back into the classics to get some relief.

Abyss,

@liztai
Refreshing and reminders that relatively mainstream movies were creative and interesting. I recently watched Christine - loved it.

@Abyss what a classic. I loved it.
Also loved Poltergeist.
That movie made me scared of mirrors for a long time 🤣

jlward,

@liztai is it that people are tired of superhero movies (entirely possible) or is it that they’re tired of studios expecting audiences to put up with poorly written stories?

I mean KDramas have been a thing for decades, right? Where are the articles about people being tired of KDramas?

Skavau,

Kdrama is literally just "Korean Drama". Superhero is a specific genre, and it's dominated by the MCU (in film).

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@Skavau @jlward Actually John, if you want to give superhero with a Kdrama flavour a try, there's Moving (Disney app) and I am Nobody ... er ok that one's harder to access for you guys but here's a clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9_QNy5xhkw

jlward,

@liztai yeah, I’m not advocating for either genre. I was just saying that the Marvel movies have recently had uneven writing and I think that’s a big component for why people are walking away from the genre.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward I wonder if Disney executives are meddling because it happened after the buyover. :P

jlward,

@liztai who knows what goes on behind those closed doors, but it might be worth considering that Disney owns Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar and that none of them are earning like they once did.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward there's this interesting talk about the creativity corporation cycle. Unfortunately it's made by a rather polarising figure - Jordan Peterson - but what he said is pretty good. Basically, creatives start something amazing, get people all interested, the product soars cos it's so different. The corporate people take over ... and the creatives fleee ... and the product goes downhill.
A cycle as old as time.

jlward,

@liztai I haven’t heard the talk, but I think one big issue that wasn’t mentioned in your summary is that the money people want a guaranteed return so they are only willing to finance things similar to past things that have succeeded. It’s why we have so many remakes and so few original movies.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward yeah i should put that in ... somewhere lol. Because that's what I think too. I remember coming across an article that stated that

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward it's difficult to be tired of KDramas as there's such a huge variety of shows. But western shows, at least in the US seem to be unadventurous right now. This is due to financial pressures, I believe, and yea studio interference. For me, anyway. I wrote about this recently - https://wp.me/pf6C2d-39

jlward,

@liztai can you elaborate on what you mean by ‘unadventurous’?

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward you can read the blog post 😅 sorry am about to go for a long drive!

jlward,

@liztai you with your obsession of getting one more click. 😁 I’m teasing.
I asked because I wasn’t sure if you had addressed that specifically in the post. Glad to know you did. I’ll check it out.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jlward I kinda did but it may sound as if I said allll of Hollywood is unadventurous. Not true of course, just that money trumps creativity these days 😞

@liztai

Honestly I only ever watched "Iron Man" and for some bizarre reason "Thor: Ragnarok." Always seemed like way too much of a time sink to actually spend the time warding the films.

It is funny that the MCU has been such a deep part of American culture that even though I have only seen two of them, I probably know the broad contours of the MCU just from the cultural ether.

Give me good stories well done any day. Would rather have that than the biggest spectacle.

JoeyPajamas,

@liztai Like everything, it goes in phases. There was a time when musicals and Westerns dominated cinema, too. Both passed. The phase of the superhero movie will as well, and something else will take its place (my money is on video game movies)

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@JoeyPajamas it seems to have stayed too long and decimated other genres!

Skavau,

Well I mean superhero doesn't dominate western TV shows like it does films.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@Skavau thank god or there will be not place left for me 🤣

Skavau,

Although oddly enough I do hear Moving is supposed to be very good.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@Skavau haha yes. But I am avoiding it precisely because it's a superhero flick. Another one is the Cdrama I am Nobody. That one I watched. Very good!
I guess these shows add some uniqueness to the genre
