@DeniseGutzmer@ai6yr My husband and I masked when we attended a wedding last year. We wore KF-94s covered by a sequined cloth mask that matched our outfits. We were the only maskers, but I actually got lots of compliments for the “sparkly” mask. Lesson: Masks as sparkly accessories? Cool. Masks to avoid a brain eating bat virus? Lame. I don’t get it lol
@tiamat271@DeniseGutzmer@ai6yr I am so here for all the discussions of masks as accessories lately! Decorating mine made me feel SO much better about being the only one masking. (Which, as you point out, is so wild given that protecting from getting and spreading a debilitating illness should be the only justification we need. But here we are.)
@aehdeschaine@DeniseGutzmer@ai6yr 100%! One thing I miss from the bird site is there was a really long thread where people would share pictures of their decorated masks. Some people are so creative!
If it's low humidity, they're golden. They just feel like part of your face. If it gets above about 75-80% they definitely get sweaty...but so does the rest of me so I can't blame them!
I've even got one I play ice hockey in, very little humidity on the ice :-)
and yup, I make 'em myself with my Glowforge laser to cut them out.
Technically I even sell them, but so far only to people who've seen them in person.
Sadly I stopped playing regularly because most of the league either refused to wear masks, or had them in their helmets but not on at all :-/
I let them know about the masks but I got a whole lot of "Eh, it'll be over in a few weeks."
Hockey brain is a real thing, but not necessarily a good thing!
@seachanger@DeniseGutzmer@ai6yr thanks for this. I bailed on a wedding last summer because I didn’t want to be the only one masked (my husband and two children went unmasked). Still not sure I’ll do it in part because I know masks aren’t always 100% and so many people out there coughing without covering their mouths. But I appreciate the sentiment.
@DeniseGutzmer@seachanger I had COVID and it sucked, I don't want it again. And i caught something pre-covid which gave me long-COVID-esque symptoms for two years (doctors never figured it out... eventually it all just cleared up). So, no, don't want to do that again.
Yup, post-viral sequelae are a real thing and are not new. The technical term for something doctors can't figure out is 'idiopathic' but somehow it sounds like a word to describe the behavior of certain kinds of people in denial.
@ai6yr@DeniseGutzmer@seachanger my two friends who are nurses at each of the two local hospitals gave me a heads up about a month ago about cases rising here in the panhandle of FL. But that's the only heads-up I'm going to get since we have no community testing data.
@ai6yr I'm in Ventura County and have seen an increase in mask wearing over the past couple of weeks. Hope to see more of it as people become aware that #itsnotover
@ai6yr Boston appears to be stable at the moment, but I’m preparing for an uptick in cases. I just spent a two weeks traveling internationally and my family were amongst the almost nonexistent mask wearers on the plane and in the airport terminals.
@ai6yr if they're seeing paramedics, is it also the more dangerous variant the last one? Over the past 6 months, I don't know anyone who's needed an ambulance or paramedic for covid but way too many mild cases.
@geographile Yup, the last surge they didn't have ANY calls for people (except the already very sick) with COVID. Extremely, extremely mild. So this is something new.
@ai6yr I totally agree… I worked on a 911 ambulance for a few years… so from my experience… informally you could what was happening in the community by the volume of calls you got with the same diagnosis 🤔
