Just had an interesting conversation with my sister who informed me while she’s been more careful than she otherwise would have been because of me, she figures she’s good because she’s lucky that if she’s had Covid, she’s either had it asymptomatically or she has been able to fight it off.

I gently told her that it could (cuz I didn’t want to argue with would) still do damage if it’ll asymptomatic and it’s 40% of the population that gets it asymptomatically. She had no clue.

She’s also had memory issues of late (mostly minor but definitely noticeable by me).

She’s intelligent. But if someone doesn’t have immediate consequences or empathy and caring for others they are just going to continue to live in the before times because “it’s not affecting them”. 😔

@giflian

That’s interesting to hear and makes sense how this is a slow roll to an untenable situation.

Yes, she recently got upset and lashed out at me because she couldn’t remember a recent meeting we had with a lawyer. I think she’s slowly realizing there might be a decline but I don’t want to bring it up when I was educating her that asymptomatic wasn’t a good thing. And she won’t change her behavior anyway.

@Scienceisnotopinions @douglaspynn These readi masks are awesome. They don’t move around when you do and you know you have a seal because they move when you breathe. I use them for haircuts and likely will on flights if you have to sleep because they won’t move (trick is putting it on while holding your breathe after going through security. )

How quickly can you get reinfections? Quicker than you think, according to a new STUDY.

“Within the initial 15 days post-infection diagnosis, almost all positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 were attributed to the original infection. However, surpassing the 30-day post-infection threshold, nearly all positive tests were attributed to reinfections.”

The study recommends shrinking the period for considering another illness as a reinfection from 90 days to 40 days.

@augieray Ugh. 40 days-not much immunity there.

GeorgiaOnMyMind,
@GeorgiaOnMyMind@zeroes.ca avatar

@augieray Thanks. I appreciate that clarification. My thoughts were that before 90 days immunity was pretty standard and it seems to have shortened, for some, but that likely could be my bias. It’s still so Russian roulette going without a mask in public and that is so frustrating because it seems endless at this point.

October 2, 2023

“...anytime a government or health officials says we have the tools to deal with Covid-19.

No we don’t.

We had the tools. All we have now are the memories of those tools.

We (and by we, I mean collectively, societally we) blew it. We threw the tools away. We traded them in for something we believed was so much better.

Why? Because the very leaders we are supposed to trust to look out for our best interests, like General Manager Tim, told us to. They gave us permission. They told us it was more important to get back to normal than to rely on those tools.”

I’ve had two doctors mention to me this past week the importance of maintaining good brain health to avoid dementia and Parkinsons-yet neither one mentions avoiding Covid. One was surprised I’ve avoided it this long and didn’t understand how I could maintain that since it’s everywhere.

What am I missing? Why isn’t Covid in their discussions for brain health (and Parkinsons)?

@hannu_ikonen Thanks. I appreciate all of this. I was disappointed (not surprised) that he ignored COVID all the while trying to sell me on his desire to keep me avoiding dementia and Parkinson’s -both of which happen in my family.

I just had my 2nd session since realising my autism, the 1st since 5 weeks with my partner with his family. So mainly a catch-up & info dump. Will clarify goals next time.

In the past therapy has been about me info dumping & them validating, helping me to clarify & a few strategies, but I struggled with clear goals.

I feel so much clearer now.

Previous therapy focussed on the impact of external traumas, the loss of loved ones, sexual assault, divorce etc, but ignored my internal pan that wasn’t explained by those traumas. I learned a lot that was useful, but so much was left unexplained. I was still in survival mode.

She reflects back & asks questions to confirm, clarify & express her understanding, & her very expressive face helps with that. I used to feel that I must look the therapist in the eye for the whole session, but I now allow myself to look out the window.

The waiting room is dim lights, soft music…

I used to feel that I had to work hard to convince the therapist, to get them on board with me, to understand, & maybe to like me so they’d be motivated to really work with me.

I think that having a somewhat better understanding of myself means I’m much clearer about boundaries, & that helps soooo much.

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic What a great therapist you have found. Good for you for continuing to look for someone to help you and see you. I've seen some responses about that NPR article along the lines of, "How can you change people's minds without conversation?"

Tbh I don't believe the author was trying to facilitate conversation. I thin she expected the article to be well-received and that her husband would be coerced into dropping some of his necessary covid precautions as a result. 1/

I've strenuously avoided trying to give advice on protecting yourself from outside of rock-solid NPIs like masks, distance, decreased time in crowds, etc. That said, I've now seen enough preliminary studies to begin using an oral probiotic, BLIS K12. If you're lactose intolerant, you may not tolerate it. But, this throat probiotic is easily obtainable and not expensive, so I'm using it daily. See the links in my next post for the research! (1/2)

@augieray Interesting. If you were super cautious and didn’t eat outdoors/always had the N95 in public would you still use this? Or is this a good way to make the outdoor eating risks/dining with others after testing safer? I haven’t don’t the latter but I know you do as safely as you can, but if someone took as many precautions would you still use this?

I really appreciate you sharing this information! I have a friend traveling abroad and I think this will give her some comfort.

Good evening, Shop. Past my bedtime, but the Mastodon Mothership gang has made a discovery of a very poorly behaved server out there.

Contentnation dot net appears to be scraping(? not sure if that's the technically correct term for this) profiles, and their associated followers and posts, and replicating them on their own service giving the appearance that Fediverse accounts are presenting themselves via CN's own services.

I saw a Xitter cross post about an immune-compromised patient who was forced into the psych ward at a hospital for requesting that the healthcare workers wear a mask. I'm absolutely horrified, but not at all surprised. Apparently we aren't even allowed to access what passes for "healthcare" these days, anymore.

GeorgiaOnMyMind,
@GeorgiaOnMyMind@zeroes.ca avatar

@PacificNic I personally know a young adult with long covid (from first 2020 infection) who made a flippant remark in the ER when once again her racing heart was acting up (but showing now signs on any tests) -something to the affect that she might just do something to herself because no one was helping.

There was absolutely no social worker sent to assess (where they would have met a very understandably frustrated woman). They put a 72 hour hold on her. The kicker. They took away the heart meds she was on for her LC and wouldn’t give them back until she met with a doctor 24 HOURS LATER.

I’m sure this happens far too often.

FYI, you can still get infected with if you have had the vaccine. It does not prevent infection itself. What it prevents is the disease form of measles, which -- with vaccination -- the immune system keeps in check

What we don't know is how and our friend -- a virus that impacts the immune system's ability to keep infections in check -- will end up impacting this

It would be wise, then, to prevent measles infection entirely by filtering it out of the air

GeorgiaOnMyMind,
@GeorgiaOnMyMind@zeroes.ca avatar

@Litzz11 @anne_twain @augieray he told people to vax and relax. He told people to take off their masks. Biden did a great disservice to us all in that 60 minutes episode. He also doesn’t mask up when he’s been exposed to COVID but everyone around him must test. If it’s good enough for him it should be good enough for the rest of us. Make sure we have clean air and free tests to protect ourselves. Biden was on the side of capitalism not the side of workers.
