debacle, to fediverse

Let's hope, that popular Fediverse instances and will find new operators and people do not have to mass-migrate.

It is a pity, that neither -based nor -based social networks have a convincing feature. The latter at least lets you easily backup and restore content ( blog items), while the former seems to handle followers better.

Account portability and the social web https://underlap.org/account-portability-in-the-social-web

I believe this is an important topic for the Fediverse. Please boost for visibility.

Thanks to @dottorblaster @jamesravey @hcj @mima @hirad @devnull for commenting on my earlier survey on this topic (https://fosstodon.org/@underlap/111617691764389915)

I wonder when we'll see custom domain #WebFinger in the #Fediverse / #ActivityPub ?

For example, I want to use:

  • @-live.youronly.one for my #Streams account
  • @-sns.youronly.one for my #Firefish account
  • @-photos.youronly.one for my #Pixelfed account
  • @-mblog.youronly.one for my #Mastodon account
  • @-reading.youronly.one for my #BookWyrm account

Ideally, even if I move to a new host/service, I can use the same WebFinger.

#MycelialWeb #MyceliumNetwork #ActivityPub2 #AP #AP2 #Portability #AccountPortability #Nomadic #NomadicIdentity #SNS #SocialWeb #SocialMedia #SocialNetwork

"If you have control of a domain name, you can have account portability on the fediverse."

2 thoughts.

1st the way Mastodon servers coped with the migration in November was awesome. I was literally amazed how for example @wild1145 & team coped with the surge that kept doubling use again & again & again, breaking media modules and all sorts. Mastodon added vast numbers to Fediverse in such a short time!

2nd If Calckey had been advocated as a platform option for many who complained about certain missing features more ppl would have been retained inside Fediverse. Edit was present on neither platform then. However the Calckey server structure at present, has an air of not seeming setup to absorb big numbers. I could be wrong about that.

The potential of the Calckey platform is great. I would love to see calckey add loads of ppl to the Fediverse.

ArtBear,

@wild1145
I'm also excited to see what pixelfed will bring in. I confess I still haven't checked out Friendica Peertube Kbin +others yet. One day in the long term replacing much of Spotify and Youtube with Fediverse services that actually directed patronage to content creators not mainly to CEOs & shareholders is a nice dream.

Having my followings.csv just be created on request and dropped into my Calckey drive (so I can then upload it to my Mastodon account @Artbear so I follow my people from both accounts) is just one of the coolest things ever!

Awesome feature, super useful native storage in platform on Calckey and awesome Fediverse functionality generally. Social platforms that aren't fighting each other, but co-operating effectively and you see your circle from all of them! So cool.

All these talk about and complaints about this, that, this, and that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from .

()? Check out and (the latter is in the ). / ? There is , , Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a -like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or . What else?

The problem stems from the fediverse ending up unofficially represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.

What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.

No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.

Also, no one is saying shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.

Here's a : Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.

Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!
